Hi

I haven't been on here for a while had a few things going on my nan got diagnosed with dementia I wrote a thread about it a little while ago saying we were worried she had it well she had a funny turn so we took her to the doctors and they confirmed she defintely has it. She had some tests done and they've said to us that she's past tablets to slow the onset which is quite upsetting but there is nothing to be done about it now. She's also broken her arm so things are even more difficult at the moment.

We moved a couple of months ago into a flat we bought.

The diabetes has been behaving quite well apart from the last week I've had some highs as a result of an ear infection which I'm taking antibiotics for. I had my 6 month review at the hospital today and all went well my
Hba1c has come down from 6.7 to 6.5 so I am very happy with that.

I think that is all really just wanted to pop in say hello and sorry for not being about Jessica keeps me very busy these days so I don't have much spare time anymore. I read threads when I get the chance but I don't really ever have anything to add. 🙂

Nice to see you back Emma. Sorry to hear about your nan. Hopefully now you've got a diagnosis she can be managed appropriately. Is Jessica well? Growing up quickly I expect!

So sorry to hear your news

I am carer ro my Dad he is almost 86 so I know how hard it can be

Well done on the diabetes though

Hi Emma! Lovely to hear from you 🙂 Don't worry about not getting time to post stuff, I am sure that Jessica needs your attention far more! :D Great news about the HbA1c! I hope the ear infection clears up soon and I'm very sorry to hear about your Nan, a similar thing happened to my Mum. I know I'm always recommending books to people (it's because I'm a lifelong book worm!), but a really good book about dementia is Contented Dementia by Oliver Sacks - it will really help you understand how your Nan sees things and how best to help her lead a happy life despite the dementia.

Take care and pop in and update us when you can 🙂

Hi Allison, thank you.

Yes if she'll let us! she doesn't believe she has dementia and won't accept any help other than from the family. My uncle tried to take her to a care home to show her round it and now she won't speak to him and has said if you try to put me in one of those places I won't go you can leave me outside and I'll find myself somewhere else to live.

Yes Jessica is really well growing up way too quickly she's saying little words here and there and is very affectionate with us her latest trick as I call it is to kiss us on the lips which is very sweet. How is your little one doing?

Thank you northerner, yes I should defintiely order that I can maybe pass it onto my mum once I've had a read I think it'll help her as she struggles to have conversations with my nan sometimes especially if she's having one of her bad days.

Will do 😉

That must be really hard work for you all. I'm sorry. Must be very worrying x

Glad Jessica is doing so well. Tom is great thank you. Just up on his feet mastering walking, though clearly finds crawling much quicker so is more than happy getting around on all fours. He's a bit of a climber as well, found him standing on the back of the sofa the other day trying to reach the light switch.......asked him what he was doing and he just said, 'that'. Bless!

Hi, sorry to read about your nan. I work in mental health services for older people and have done for many years, if there is anything you have any queries over feel free to pm me, would do my best to help 🙂
Regardless of the type of dementia your nan has been diagnosed with, the Alzheimers Society are a very useful resource for carers.

Hi Emma,

Hi Emma,

Very sorry to hear about your nan. I hope she has more good days than bad days for the next little while as everyone adjusts.

Good to hear from you, and glad Jessica is doing well 🙂

Brilliant news on your HbA1c, with caring for a young child, the stress of moving & your nan's diagnosis that is one hell of an achievement!

Alan - I think the author is actually Oliver James? I have just ordered my copy. I am struggling with my mum who has been diagnosed recently - I feel I have lost her and every conversation seems to end in a shouting match which is totally out of character for her. The book sounds very helpful in helping me find mum again - thank you.

Emma I do hope things are okay with your nan - be sure to look after yourself too. I have just made that mistake and ran myself into the ground, but am on the mend now.🙂

You're correct Lucy! Must have been having a hypo... 😉 It is one of those books that completely changes your perspective - I only wish I had read it before my mum's dementia became so advanced.
