So here's the thing...

I've let myself down again.
After raking out my Blood testing kit and setting it up for today, i haven't done a single test! :(

I feel like i'm fooling myself into thinkin it will all be ok to put it off for one more day when in actual reality i know that every test counts, never mind full days of them!

Lets hope tomorow is a better day!

Alarm set.. 9am.. Wake-up! BLOOD TEST!

Should be enough to kick start the old habit of having it with me at all times 🙂

Fingers crossed!

Jodi

Jodi, please do the test as planned, otherwise we will nag you until you do! 🙂 The thing is, you are worrying anyway about what the numbers might be, so you might as well find out so you know where you are starting from - I hope that it is much better than you expect, do let us know how you get on 🙂

Jodi, i dont know your story or why you wont test.

but please start, you must think of the long term health benefits to doing them and therefore getting your insulin doses right etc. I simply cannot imagine not testing but giving insulin that would be way to scary.

please test if u dont how will u know how your levels are and if you need to adjust for them
I know it may seem a lot of bother but you just need to get into the habbit of doing it, once you get into the habbit it will become second nature and as Alan says we will nag you
take care

I think it was everydayupsanddowns who said there's no such thing as a bad test, it's merely a means of knowing what adjustments to make. And you don't want to come crashing down suddenly. Take it gradually over a few days. But testing will help you to get there slowly.

Don't see it as a massive step and you've been bad not doing it. Just test. No big deal.

I used to have several boxes of strips unopened. I now can't make a box last a week.
That was about 2 years ago. I'd been diabetic for over 3 years and still didn't want to test properly. I'm lucky I still have my eyes and can feel properly. But I don't feel guilty. Just glad that I now know what my BG is.🙂

Jodi, the important thing is that you *want* to do it.

Is there anyone locally you could talk to, agree to test at certain times? Ie text each other first thing in the morning with your test results - no judgements, no suggestions, etc, just a way of knowing you're keeping track?

The other thing to remember is that if you're out of the habit of testing regularly, it would be silly to presume you will just start testing X times a day and keep it up - take it slowly. Start with 1 or 2 tests a day, and build it up. Otherwise if you set yourself big targets, ie testing 5 times a day, you'll feel disappointed if you don't reach that goal.

Small steps - and we're here for you 🙂

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Corny and teeth-grindingly obvious, but true all the same.

Make tomorrow the first day.

Ok Guys.. So i didn't do a test today but i've done one just now.

I have been up at my friends all day keeping myself busy helping her with her two young children 🙂

I've just walked home which takes a total of about ten minutes and it is all down hill so here goes, the BG is.... 5.2 :O I must say i am very pleasantly surprised by this. Guess properly paying attention to carbs and units of Novorapid - even without testing - is a help.

First step to control - COMPLETE 🙂

Brilliant! Well done Jodi! Great result but don't worry if your next one isn't quite so good and don't think 'ah that was good so I don't need to do another' - let us know when you have done the next one and what it was. Good luck 🙂

Cracking! First of many I'm sure.

Test away in the hot weather... many peeps find hot temperatures give them lower BGs 🙂

BG

Ok so it's 2.30pm and i'm doing my first test of today and it is..... 19.0 :O

Do you have a correction ratio? ie 1 unit brings you down x.xmmol/l? That's obviously pretty high and could do with coming down.

Keep up with the testing 🙂

When did you last eat, and what was it? By the way, make sure your strips are in date if you haven't used them for a while.

Shiv's right about normally correcting a 19, but if you only ate recently you might end up having a hypo. The problem of course is that you can't be sure what you were before eating your lunch, and so know how much higher your BG might have risen, so for the next couple of test try to make sure you do them before and perhaps 2 hours after eating to start with so you can get more information from them.

Well done on starting back on track - you'll get there! 🙂

Well the thing is, i dont know exactly what each unit takes me down by.

And i havent eatin since my tea last night. i dont tend to eat much before tea time, if i do i end up feelin bloated and ill so i'd rather avoid it, at most i have few slices of toast through the day.

I find i have more energy if i dont eat through the day than i do if i eat breakfast and dineer like i should.

Thanks for the support, I'll keep you guys posted.

Jodi,

Hey,

Your team should be able to help you work out correction factors. If you haven't eaten since last night, it could be your basal insulin that is wrong at the moment - it should be holding you steady in the safe range (in theory).

Keep going 🙂

Jodi, if you can have just a little of something for breakfast then I bet you'll find that your levels don't climb quite so high. Your liver will think you are starving and release glucose to compensate, so even though you are not eating your levels will still rise. Eating something, even just half a slice of toast, can help stop this going on too long. Also, as Shiv suggests, it may be that you don't have enough basal insulin anyway, although you need to be careful about increasing that given that your previous reading was 5.2.

Stick with the testing, each one is telling you so much about things you might be able to look at to improve your control which you can then discuss with your DSN. It can be hard getting into the habit, but before you know it you will be doing it without hardly noticing and it will no longer be a big deal! 🙂

2nd test of the day

Haven't ate yet but done another test, 22. something,

Need my sugar down by about 15 to make it reasonable so gonna take ten units just now, cause effectivley since my ratio is 2:1 i need double what you guys would take.

Will update in a couple hours to let you now how i get on with this 'adjustment'

Hope you're getting on okay 🙂
