Can anyone suggest what to take if you have a nite time hypo? if i take lucazade i'm worried about my teeth ( i'm a dental nurse ) also i always wake up with a headache in the morning.. i find it difficult how much to eat before bed if i've been active thru the day. last nite went to bed bsl 5.9 had 1 slice of granary with cheese and still woke up with hypo at 4.00am.. it goes inside if i've been cycling or very active thru the day.. i hope all this makes sense?? xx

Perhaps you can try some jelly babies as fizy drinks are very acidiy anyway. If not sort out the hypo and bring your levels back up and then either brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with plain water.

Hi babe.. I tend to go for Lucozade in the night as it is quick and easy. I agree with what you say about dental health though!! It is a concern , but i always rinse my mouth with water afterwards.. wait a while then clean my teeth.

I think the teeth thing is always going to be an issue with night hypos, you need something sugary quickly....so I thinks as insulinaddict says, water then re-brushing teeth may be the only solution.

Nighttime hypos are a pain (literally!). It took me ages to work out how best to avoid them. Certainly a snack before bed if you are below 7.x is a good idea. If you are below 6.0 then maybe you should eat a bit more before bed. Bear in mind too that, depending on what time you last ate, you may still have some insulin circulating from your mealtime bolus, which might therefore lower your bedtime levels further. If you have been active during the day, it might be worth lowering your evening meal insulin and your basal. I found that I have a bit of a peak with my lantus in the middle of the night, so need to make sure my levels are high enough before bed. I've found that I need to go to bed at around 8.x to wake around 5.x and not have a hypo in the middle of the night.

You can't really escape from the need for something sugary if you do hypo, because you have to have fast-acting carbs. I personally have jelly babies and a digestive or cereal bar. Possibly a couple of spoonfuls of jam, swallowed quickly would have less impact on your teeth? Hopefully, if you can get your bedtime levels and basal insulin right you won't need to do it too often!🙂

Thanks for your help.. i think if i'm under 6 for bed will need more of a snack, its a nightmare when ur trying to keep ur weight under control too!

I always give my son a snack before bed if his level is under 7 and it seems to work for us. If he under 7 and he has not been active during the evening then it is just a small snack (eg one or two digestive biscuits) but if he is under 7 and has been acvtive during the evening then a larger snack (eg one or two slices of toast).
Would I be correct in thinking that if you drank using a straw (which is what we often do) then the sugary drink (we use fruit juice to treat hypo) goes straight down the throat and not so much around the teeth?
