Hi I am new to diabeties and to the message board. I have a problem with my food because of a really bad taste in my mouth. Any ideas how to solve this problem.

Yes. I am told that it could be the medication I am receiving, but not sure which is the cause

On Metformin?

I recall that one of it's stated side-effects can be a metallic taste in the mouth. If you haven't been on it all that long it could be a transitory affect.

Welcome rjd As you are type 2 it could be the medication that you are taking, thats if you are on meds. I read on another forum that a medication can produce a metallic or a bitter taste. Were you given any info or leaflets about the Diabetes? I hope it doesn't last too long, if you are concerned, then maybe a chat with your DSN would help. Best wishes Sheena

I was on Metformin 500mg twice daily for three weeks in feb/mar but this was withdrawn in favour of diet only for two months. I was also prescribed pravastatin at the same time for cholestoral which I still take.

This may or may not be the same thing, but in autumn 2007 I had a foul taste in my mouth and couldn't stand most foods -- by December I was reduced to fruit and fruit juices, as they were all I could tolerate. I suspected it was a mouth infection, so treated it with Listerine Total c**p, which cleared it up.

This episode meant that I lost a bit of weight, but it also badly affected my energy levels (which were low because I'd started suffering OSA), and when I was admitted to hospital, my lack of stomach contents and hence of bowel movements meant that I was misdiagnosed as constipated. :(

Trying the mouthwash route (perhaps on medical advice) might do the trick.

If you haven't had one recently, it may pay you to get a dental check too, just to rule out all possibilities.

2nd that idea 🙂 Hope things are better for you soon.

Good point. The taste in my mouth was one of the first indicators of my periodontal disease many years ago, and was a sign of poor management of the condition in later years.
