im going to have to brave dentist as half my tooth as fell out. just wondering if anybodys knows wether you can still have anesthetic beings im diabetic. dont do dentists as it is but doing it without pain relief wil kill me😡

Had extraction yesterday and anesthetic is fine, no adverse effects..........

Whether or not larger doses may effect blood sugar, I dont know, but I can think of how it would, unless there was some effect on the liver.....

There are very few people the dentist can't use an anasthetic on and they are refred to hospital for it. In most cases you are OK and the diabetes is taken into account.

I was asked, have you had your insulin.................I was ready to reply........then she said and your up to date with your food, which is more like it, as hypo is the risk when on the chair, not high, for me anyway...........🙂

SOme of this is a bit of a fog, I think it might work a little differently for type 2s. We are less likes (but it's not impossible) to hypo. Last time I went to the dentist and had a tooth out they asked about my medication and said I should be OK, but I think it pays to ask questions of them too.

Depends on your treatment, as usual, T2s on insulin can hypo. I find that dental treatment lowers by levels, probably the stress and adrenaline release, nothing a bag of crisps or jelly baby can't fix. Prior to all medical treatment make sure everyone is aware you are diabetic and tell the dentis/doctor, paramedic etc what treatment you are on.

You should also let the dentist know if you are on aspirin daily too, as it affects blood clotting. My dentist is happy to do most work on me, but said if I needed an extraction I would have to go to the hospital, because of the aspirin (and clopidogrel, when I was on it). Now I'm just on aspirin, I could just not take it for a few days prior to the appt. so dentist could do it.

To start with, all credit to you for going in the first place. I'm a T1 and there was no problem last time I went which was a root canal job. In fact I don't think the question was even asked. That said it was a long time ago and things are probably checked more these days. In fact I think his son is retired now!!!

i have recently had a disastrous visit to the new NHS dentist that has recently opened up we havent had one for 5 years locally ...check with them what pain releif they can offer on the NHS now ....she didnt xray me and i only had mouth injections .....and then she tried to remove a back tooth and the wisdom tooth next to it ....she only managed to get one out and loosen the other ....the pain was so cronic i went into shock..😡 the following week i arranged to have the wisdom tooth removed by another dentist privately under sedation ....at a cost of ?417 😱 good luck x

i feel for you am64. i had sedation a few years back but luckily managed to get sedation for free as our dentist does that there and then. but now they have decided im too overweight to have it. so gunna have to be a brave gal hopefully they wont have to take tooth out. only half has come away so hoping then can build on it. if not i will be running out of there screaming

When I was diagnosed I was in hospital for 8 days. One of the things that worried me most in there wasn't the diabetes, or the suspected heart attack - it was the tooth that had broken in half a couple of days before going in! My dentist was great though and did a tremendous job of building it back up, so hopefully yours will be able to do the same. Tooth problems can be inordinately worrying!
