Is there a link between being cold and high bg?

I am constantly cold hubby is on a bit of a warfare with conserving the oil for our central heating... which I completely agree with... but its so blooming cold here.

He reckons that the benefits of being "cooler" far outways being toasty and warm😡

thanks

I suffer from the cold a lot more than I used to pre-diagnosis, especially for the first 18 months or so, so it may be that what you were comfortable with before (due to hubby's philosophy!) is no longer warm enough for you and he doesn't realise this. Some people do experience higher levels when they are cold as it is a form of stress. Get him to be a bit less stingy or buy you one of those 'Snuggles' and 'Big Boots' 😉

Yes I agree Alan. I have to wear boot slippers now as feet are constantly freezing if I don't. I also notice I have my comfort blanket around me in the evenings too. I also notice that when I am heading towards a hypo I get shaky cold - but thats a different sort of shivery cold. Also when I go out now - I am sure a year ago I would have ran to the car with no coat on - now i am wrapped up to take the rubbish to the bin! Any ideas why we feel the cold more?

I really don't know but I find it very annoying! I'm not as bad as I used to be but pre-diagnosis I used to get told off by old ladies in the street fr walking around in -5 in shirt sleeves, and I used to run through snow in shorts nad tshirt - now I need my thermals and leggings!

It could be due to poorer circulation which diabetics are prone to. When my BG is high, I'm generally hotter than usual.

If you've lost weight, you may feel the cold a lot more. It's disproportional to the amount of weight you lose too.

And tbh, it is flippin cold today due to the North wind. Brrrr.

Rob

I never thought about the weight loss Robster - a good point, although I still have plenty to keep me warm - I have lost a fair bit!

I did think it was due to age -so either the diabetes or weight loss will do for me!

I'm the cartoon teeth chatter and shivier and I don't have to be particually cold😱

It's not so much the diabetes as it's only somthing that I've suffered in the last several years or so... It's linked to an underactive thyroid it's the only symptom that I've have displayed..

My husband suffer no cold issues's at all..

But strangely we used to live in a house without central heating, never suffered with colds during this time, it's only since we've moved to a house with central heating that snooty noses have been present!

But it's true that the older one gets the more they feel the cold, I seen this happen with my dad.. Years ago when my grandparents were still alive, we paid a visit in the summer and they had the gas fire full blast😱

And dad made the comments about green house etc... Years later when dad was himself in his 80's and I took him home after sunday lunch, the hottest day of the year!

Frist thing he did when he got home, was to give his rayburn a good stoke and put more coal on! My kids faces were a picture of waves of confusion, shock, horror etc LOL

I do agree with lack of central heating can be better for less colds etc - we went a whole winter once with no heating but no colds either!

Hi Hotchop I don't think I experience cold with high Bg's. I am the other way, I get hot very quickly, of course I do feel the cold but as far as I know nothing has changed. We have friends who live in Wales and they are constanly cold in the winter, they are out in the sticks and also use oil, but no Diabetes.
I think hubby might be a bit mean :( try and get on the good side of him and get him to comprimise a bit, it's not nice feeling cold all the time is it?
How about YOU saving on the heating and produce a cold meal ( or meals) for him, it might work 😛 Sheena x

I don't think diabetes has anything to do with feeling the cold, the trouble is we have all got use to central heated homes and offices and become soft over time, when I was a boy my bedroom window had more ice on the inside that was outside, the only heating in the home was a coal fire in the living room. Open the windows and get out and about then the body soon adapts to cooler weather.🙂

I don't experience being cold when I am high, but post diagnosis I feel the cold more the I did pre diagnosis. Indoors I have jackets cardigans and things to keep wamr with all over the place, and at work I refuse to take my fingerless gloves off all throught the winter.

Today, for instance, I am fully dressed in jeans and a sweater... with a big wooly dressing gown over me heheh

I know what you mean Rob re the North winds..... Its blooming freezing.
Hubby reckons I should "move" more hahaha

Interesting re the weight loss side... I dont really need to lose weight though I can see how it could make me feel chilly.

I will wait for hubby to go out before I chain myself to a hot radiator lol

I wonder why it is always me that has to be different. Ever since diagnosis i am always too hot. I can't cope with the summer weather but all through the winter i am too hot. The only problem is that no matter how cold it is, even when we had alot of snow, i am always the one shopping with no coat on and people would look at me as if i was mad. Maybe i am just weird or from another planet. 🙂

I grew up with the ice on the bedroom window etc, as too opening the windows and getting out and about you get used to the cold..

Doesn't work 100%... My job used to be outdoors even now I am out everyday all winds and weather with my two dogs and still feel the cold..

If you seen my dog walking gear for winter months you would laugh.. Michalin man sort is the best discription😱

I think I am a reptile - I seem to take on the surrounding temperature. I am too cold in winter and too got in summer. Strangely though during the period I took anti-deps my temperature control was OK.

I definitely fel the cold more than other people, if I go away I make sure i have loads of warm clothing in case the ambient temperature of the rooms is too cold for me.

Funnily enough after I had my children I improved a great deal - didn't need so many blankets at night, so i do wonder if it is something to do with cirulation - your heart pumps round 40% more blood when you are pregnant.

I found when I got more active a few years ago, I felt the cold less. Diabetes can cause circulatory problems but it may only be with extremities.

I've also noticed, at times when my muscle tone has improved (rarely!), that I feel warmer.

Funnily, the fitter I am the more I feel the cold. It's fine when I'm putting out a reasonable wattage, as that keeps me warm. It's when I stop exercising that my body seems to shut down immediately and loses all its heat. Bit painful when I'm toasty warm from riding to work, and then start to freeze when I get there and start testiculating [1].

I have another hot/cold thing I'll post on a separate topic...

Well I don't know what you lot are on about - feeling the cold indeed!!

I'm sat by the radiator dressed in trousers, thick socks, bootee slippers, thermal vest, polo neck jumper and fleece - and I'm perfectly warm :D
