Just needing somewhere to vent.
Been a really bad diabetic this weekend home from uni, too much cake giving me highs of 20 though it could have been more like 17 since I tested a few times and that was the final 2x result (hope that was correct anyway). I checked for ketones of which I have none, thats good right 🙂
So I have no way of treating this since i'm not on insulin; but it kind of seems dangerous to me that, even though it is my fault, I don't have any 'back-up' or advice with what I can do...

I'm fed up of this now, I don't know what I should do. Its like I don't get taken seriously as a diabetic, normally my levels have been good and I haven't seen anything above 8/9 for the past week or so.

I also told the doc I get quite frequent lows that make me feel awful and he seemed a bit concerned and said he normally tells people to stay between 4 - 8mmol. I'm not an ordinary person though am I. I asked him about the whole MODY thing, he's getting other bloods done for me but he said he doesn't know of any specific testing. Well I do!!!

I mean I don't want to go on meds and definately don't want insulin full stop. But I just need a bit of guidance on whats going on with me. One minute I can be doing good and the next apparently not...

I feel like well if you had a say laptop that didn't work properly then you'd take it to get fixed and find out whats wrong with it. Hey - my pancreas ain't working properly whatcha gonna do about that? Nothing apparently, and its more important than a sodding laptop.

Not the whole answer, but appropriate treatment is mpore important than diagnosis. Treatment means diet, exercise, perhaps tablets, perhaps injectable medications, perhaps insulin.
Until you next see your doctor, I would suggest that you keep a record of food intake, exercise and blood glucose records, including when eg on rising, before meals, 2 hrs after meals etc, and take that to your appointment.
You already learned to limit your cake intake 🙂

By frequent lows, how often and what levels are you talking. Correct me if I am wrong but you are currently not any meds are you ? (you were taken off insulin).

Now that you've got yourself high - you will have to let nature take its course and bring you down. Drink plenty of fluids though as you are likely to need more bathroom breaks for a while.

Fortunately I woke up and tested, down to 6.6 🙂 Higher than normal in the morning but nothing to worry about.

I'm not on meds at all, discussed my lows briefly with the doc the other day. Lowest is 3.2 but I often get something below 4 at least every other day... It happens when I haven't eaten for a while - much like it would if I was on insulin. I've looked up about insulin resistance, but it doesn't seem to be the likely story since its very much a gradual drop so i'm producing and using my own effectively surely?

Something weird going on, and I think you deserve to have some investigations to see what. Even if they can't find out exactly what at least they will have tried. I woudl suggest seeing if your GP will refer you to the diabetes centre. If not then contact directly one of the genetic diabetes nurses, they will be able to review your case and speak to your GP if they feel you might be a candidate for MODY testing.

Definately something weird going on!

There is a study going on in the hospital by me about MODY and they're requesting whatever-type diabetics for testing. I was originally asked if I wanted to get involved but unsure what it includes.
Anyhow, I managed to find out a little more about it online but they're requesting those diagnosed sixth months ago - why would this be?
