BG Meter lifespan

I was curious if there is a lifespan for BG meters. I bought mine in 2021, and read somewhere they should be replaced every 4 to 5 years, so I should be replacing it soon. I wondered what others thought.

Do you keep your meters for years and years or regularly replace them?

I keep mine years. My AccuChek is still going strong and I have no reason to think it’s inaccurate. I’m not sure exactly how old it is but well over 4 or 5 years.

I too keep my meters for many years.
I only replaced my last meter when it became waterlogged during a rainy walk in Wales.
As long as my meter is working and the strips are still available, we continue our lives together.

AccuChek is a good brand, so probably better built than my Navii Gluco! I have an AccuChek mobile (which is not made anymore), but the cost of the (over-engineered) cassette strips made it very expensive to run.

I’ve heard that too.

Though confession time… I am still using the rechargeable ContourNext BG meter I had that came with my MM640G, which was 2 pumps ago - or at least 8-9 years.

Mine’s a Mobile too 🙂 I wonder when they started making it? I got mine soon after that as my previous AccuChek had broken and when I phoned them they told me about the Mobile and sent me one.

Just googled and apparently the Mobile was introduced in 2010! So yes, mine is ancient  Solid piece of gear though and clearly built to last:D

I’ve never thought of replacing my meter TBH, althoughI’m because I’m lucky enough to get the strips on prescription the surgery I’m with has for several years chosen which meters patients use (if strips on prescription) that machine is the neon diagnosis fine test lite, I have two (one is in bedroom one in car) both I’ve had for many years

Mine dates from March 2019, so over 6 years old. Some sites say they should be replaced every 2-5 years, others every 3-5 years, but what they all say is to follow the manufacturer's recommendations. I'll have to dig out my manual and see what it says.

I suppose it depends to some extent on usage, too. There must be some wear & tear from repeatedly inserting and withdrawing test strips.

I have the predecessor of the GlucoNavii, the Codefree which I have had for nearly 10 years and it is still fine. Strips still available.

One reason that's often given for replacing an old meter is that by sticking with your old one you might be missing out on advances in technology.

My pump clinic recommends a change every two years. I changed last year to their current recommendation: CareSens Dual. Quite handy as you can test BG and ketones with the same meter, just different strips. Not that I test for ketones that often. In the past, I had a separate meter for ketones but every time I went to use it the battery was flat,.

I have an Agamatrix jazz prescribed last year. The first one failed after a few months and was replaced by the pharmacy attached to our doctor's surgery. The new one is still working fine.(fingers and toes crossed!)

My Spirit Healthcare Tee2 + has had new batteries but seems fine and must be some years older than your meter.
