Type 2
Hello,

I was diagnosed type 2 in March 2024, had blood sugars checked June 24 and was well controlled. Just been checked again and blood sugars are back up to almost starting value. Is once a year blood sugar check normal? Couldn't get appointment for a month with diabetic team, just wondering what the potential next step will be? Likely to be medication increase?

Bloods being repeated aswell due to another unexpected result but unsure if they will check blood sugar again?

Thank you

I'm not asking for medical advice just wondering about potential next steps if similar to anyone else.

It is very easy for things to slip when you think everything is hunky-dory having got a good result with the measures you took but it is important that those things are maintained otherwise it can slip back. Once people have achieved a good result i.e.6 back to normal then annual checks are the norm which is why many do have a home testing blood glucose monitor to keep a regular check themselves day to day, week to week to make sure they are keeping on track.
Depending on what meds you are on and what your recent HbA1C is it would be worth re-evaluating your diet to see if that is where the problem lies. Many have found a low carbohydrate approach reduces their HbA1C and keeps them there if they regard the low carb as a new way of eating. That is no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day is suggested, some people do need to go lower. Have a look at this link for some pointers for moving forward as by making some dietary changes you may not need meds or more meds depending on what you are taking. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Sorry to hear your HbA1c has risen a little after your initial reduction @jingies888 :(

It’s not uncommon for people to reduce down to an annual review if their diabetes management is stabilised, but it is quite common for people to have a period of more frequent monitoring close to diagnosis (eg 6 monthly checks for a year or two, or if therapy/meds are changing).

If you would find it better to be checked more frequently, perhaps you could request an interim check in 6 months’ time to monitor any progress of changes you might be considering?

Are you aware of having ‘taken your foot off the gas’ from when you were first diagnosed, and your HbA1c dropped?
