Hi all , I had a letter telling me that my 3 year driving licence expires in June and to apply for a new one. I filled out the online form and submitted it last Tuesday evening expecting a long wait , but happily it turned up this morning.
Great service from the DVLA.

I had the same turnround when I renewed mine but then diabetes is one of the medical conditions that allows renewal online. Other medical conditions don't and then it's forms through the post, and the inevitable long wait.

I appreciate snail mail driving license renewal is slow for many but based on my experience (I appreciate I am a sample of 1), the snail mail is not the thing that slows it down.
I needed both medical and photo renewal and I could not find a mechanism to do both at the same time online - they were separate requests with no reference number to link them.
This was renewed by snail mail in less than a month.
The dvla experience was not as good as passport renewal (no emails providing regular status updates, for example) but after a few weeks of silence, my new license with new photo appeared on my door mat.
A week later, I received a letter to say it was on the way and how to complain if I didn't like their decision...to issue a license!

I agree there doesn't seem to be rhyme nor reason as to how you are supposed to renew. After years of doing it on paper I was delighted to be able to do it online, and to be able to use my passport photo. But last year it was back to paper - I looked for ages to find a way to renew online (I have no other relevant medical conditions) and to use my passport photo (less than 12 months old at the time) but to no avail. The only change to my circumstances I could think of was that I'd turned 70 since the previous renewal.

All forms completed and new photo taken by my OH (fortunately we have a lot of white walls in our house so not too difficult to meet the required standard, and the photo was much nicer than my passport one!), the package was despatched and the new licence appeared within a fortnight. Like helli, I got the letter to say it was on its way after the event.

That's good to know. I'm coming up to my first renewal so I was wondering whether you get notified.
