Does anyone fancy a meet-up cycle ride?

I was just wondering if any of you would be interested in MEETING FOR a cycle ride, no clue where but would be nice to have a little support from others affected by Type 1 and how cycling helps!

Yes sorry, I meant Type 1s and Type 2's and Threes or anyone who wants to go 😉🙄 around Lancashire areas into Yorkshire, or maybe somewhere I have not cycled I'd am up to it, was thinking maybe teh Lake District but let's see what or where we want to do it in the group. but I'm no leader for the ride! 😳 But with help, I can try but I always get lost  :thankyou: .

Maybe give others an idea of region, area, town etc ?

Not personally, but if you give some indication of whether you’re only inviting T1s or if you’re happy to cycle with T2, T3, and other types. Also whether you’re in Shetland, the Scilly Isles, or somewhere in between, that might help.

I'm a keen cyclist and I wouldn't mind taking part in a ride to raise funds/awareness for Diabetes UK

Yep, I'm up for that - we did start discussing in a previous thread but for whatever reason it didn't come to anything (iirc in here, which if nothing else will give a list of people who might be interested: https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/lets-be-boring-and-talk-bicycles.110954/)

I'm in the South West (between Bath & Frome) but more than happy to travel - there are Veloviewer tiles to tick off and BCQ locations to visit so any excuse must be embraced 🙂

I'm all for this but I never know quite how to raise funds - I can't with a straight face ask people to donate for me to do something I'd do anyway.

One good thing about a sponsored event is that if you raise (iirc) £300 you get (or at least used to get) a free Diabetes UK cycling cap. I would happily pay to buy one of these, but they are not for sale in the shop. I don't know whether this pricing structure sits on the right (correct) side of the Laffer Curve or not but in any case I live without.

I think that such an event would probably be of more value in terms of raising awareness of the Charity than in generating actual cash. I'd expect that everyone riding would have to pay a (fairly hefty) entry fee, so that at least the event wouldn't lose money for Diabetes UK.

What's the point of a cycling cap? We're not in the 1980s: all keen cyclists wear helmets nowadays. A Diabetes UK cycling jersey would be better - and would be good publicity, if everyone wears the jersey during the event.

Keeps the sun out of your eyes (or more likely the rain out of your eyes - this is a useful thing eyebrows also do, I miss them - alopecia) and for the rest of the time it avoids any wasps ingested into my helmet vents from coming into contact with my now bald scalp before I can stop and set them free!

Yes, I have done a few of them now they are great fun with rewards, but be better the more of us doing it that type 1 with are tops on if we have them 🙂

I could ask my leader for help with arranging a good ride, how many miles would suit us all? 60m?

Lol: I can see I'm missing a trick - especially as I'm balding too! A jersey might still be better in terms of visibility of the ride, in newspapers and so on.

Sorry, I missed the part about your alopecia: I didn't mean to be insensitive

Agreed, though it depends somewhat on the weather - I've ridden a couple of Team/Corporate sportives events in the past and the jersey we had was often either hidden under a waterproof or had to be removed and stretched over the top of additional layers due to unseasonably cold temperatures.

I did think that in early spring (which is when these ones were) a logo'd gilet might make more sense, but it does depend on clothing preferences (and cost - gilets were more expensive), which is why one comes back to the jersey I guess.

Praying for sunshine might be the answer 🙂

It's a different experience for T1 vs T2 (or rather for those on blood glucose lowering medications including insulin vs those not), I'd not want to exclude people though so don't necessarily rule T2s (or other types!) out.

The more inclusive the better I'd say - it would be nice to cater to all levels of experience by offering a range of distances. I'm happy with whatever.

While I rarely ride Sportives (I far prefer to plan and ride my own routes, normally because I'm trying to tick off tiles or visit British Cycling Quest locations) this is a case where tagging onto a Sportive event might make some sense in terms of the infrastructure and routes already provided. OTOH I'm happy with whatever.

I think we need to be as inclusive as possible, which means people with any type of diabetes - and active encouragement for e-bike users. A message from this event needs to be that any exercise is good for people with (or at risk of) diabetes.

  🙄 maybe a top with I Need a Pump - Omnipod Dash! And need one! 🙄:rofl: Yes, that is what I have said basically all are welcome, but you have to remember only 15 are allowed in each section of riders if a lot are coming! I was only asking for a ride not a big event that be too much for me to be managing in! Unless someone else want too.

:-D, very good. I wonder what other cycling double-entendres could be created...

Why the limit of 15? Is this something to do with a ride leader only being able to be responsible for a certain number of people?

If it's simply a case of turn up and ride, then presumably there is no actual limit, though it would be useful to make sure phone numbers/WhatsApp/list of who's there is available to avoid losing people!

I'm not sure really I think its down to safety with only 15 riders in a line, but not fully sure, I just do as as the leader wants, so it may be down to this. I cycle with C.T.C so it may be their rules, but it may be different if it's an event run like Diabetes UK do I have no clue I don't think there are any laws to say there's a limit on how many are in a group.
