Hi all, Has anyone tried taking valerian root for anxiety? I have read some comments online that it can reduce blood sugar levels although it doesn't say this on the information leaflet. I bought a low dose to try but I'm thinking that it might not be a good idea to take it now. I know that if I ask my GP or consultant they will just tell me that it doesn't work because it's a traditional medicine so I'm not sure what to do.

I’ve only heard of it being used in pets. My SiL tried it on an anxious dog, but unfortunately it didn’t prove effective.

Could you perhaps ask the qualified pharmacist (not counter staff) at your local chemist shop?

Valerian is one of the components of Nytol herbal sleeping tablets but there are some warnings about who shouldn't take it because of other medications. It probably all depends on the dose and it is not approved for anxiety according to Google.

I took some valerian in a herbal tea (to help sleep) and it made me feel awful. If you want something gentle, I’d recommend the Bach’s Rescue Remedy (the little bottle with the dropper). I didn’t believe it would work but when I was going through a stressful time, it made me calmer.

Counselling can also be good for anxiety. Talking helps you get things back in their right place in your head. I’ve also found Mindfulness and Tai Chi very helpful.

Give it a try you can get it as a tea which is mild. Drs don’t like natural herbal things as they don’t get the pharmaceutical benefits of prescription. I’ve had two herbal mixtures to deal with liver issues and last blood tests all now normal was very high levels Feb last year. Drs had to admit it must have worked….. just try and see how you are sweetie
