Bit of a random question however does anyone know if it’s ok to take probiotics when on Metformin Slow Release please?

Before I was diagnosed T2 in November 2024 I was taking Hanna Sillitoe Multi Strain Probiotic daily to help with gut/skin and eczema, however since stopped as not sure if ok to keep taking it.

Skin is pretty awful and really hope it is ok to restart it again. Random acne has appeared on one side of my face just before being diagnosed and has got worse to date. Hoping by restarting probiotics will help both the eczema and acne etc.

Hey @Zaraah, I'd say it's fine to take it with Metformin (SR), it won't interfere with the medication. The only thing I think might be wise to bear in mind is that it may cause a little upset tummy when first reintroduced into your diet but hopefully not too much since you're on SR Metformin. Let us know how you get on and hope the eczema and acne clears up for you soon. :thankyou:

Thanks @Anna DUK. I really hope so as eczema I been dealing with prior to diagnosis, however this random acne all on one side of face just out of no where so fingers crossed clears up.

It may also be changing hormone levels which are affecting your skin.
Your GP can probably prescribe something to help or ask the pharmacist.
There is no reason why you can't go back to your probiotics they will likely help with any side effects from the metformin as well.

Thanks @Leadinglights. I have ordered the probiotic now so can restart so hoping that helps: not sure I want to go on more prescribed medications with GP. Fingers crossed the probiotics work for now.

Unusual to have acne on just one side of your face. It isn't the side you sleep on is it? Just wondering if it is an allergic reaction to something on your pillow... maybe a change of detergent or new bedding or pillow causing a reaction?

I was thinking of something more topical to treat with rather than oral.
But as suggested it could be an allergic reaction to something so you could try an antihistamine.

Really random as started to get couple of spots about 4-6 weeks prior to be diagnosed. Today actually spreading to chin as well now.

Everything has stayed the same as in nothing new except now having T2 and now on medications. It is really odd.

Hopefully it will settle down once numbers come down and stabilise as only been on medications for 6 weeks. If not will mention to nurse in New Year!

Thank you everyone!
