Hi - Type 2 and have to bring down my HbA1c from 78 or the diabetic nurse is going to put me on insulin, which I absolutely do not want. Sooo .... having another go at low carb, which is very difficult for a fussy eater like me. Just started 10 days ago and all going well. I've been pleased with my BG readings of around 7.5 before meals. I have even had a couple of 6.2 and one at 5.9, which were very encouraging. This morning I had breakfast about an hour and a half later than usual and my reading pre meal was 10.2 ! I thought it would be lower than usual because of the longer time between meals, not higher!

So discouraged by this and having to force myself not to go in the kitchen and eat something I shouldn't. Because what's the point of depriving myself if its not working? Sorry - just needed to rant. I will go back to my craft room and sew to keep myself busy and try not to think of food. :(

Sounds like dawn phenomena/foot on the floor syndrome. Liver releases glucose and hormones kick in - causes blood sugar to go up in T2 diabetics who are insulin resistant or are not producing enough insulin to deal with it. (It has been seen in non-diabetics as well, but the rise is usually small.)

Are you on any medication?

Many people find that if they skip breakfast or have a late breakfast, their own body pumps out some glucose, pushing blood sugar higher. It sounds like that was the likely reason @Kittyrose

Hi - thanks for the advice. I was hoping that it would come down to the usual level before lunch but still high at 11. It seems like today is not going well and it is so discouraging.

Yes I am on the maximum medication which is why my nurse is threatening insulin. She gave me three more months to try to get my HbA1c down.

I think it is really out of order to use insulin as a 'threat' but even so it may be the right option for you. However your reading are not that high.
If you do some paired readings before you eat, whenever that is, and 2 hours after then you may spot some food which are not tolerated all that well if the increase is more than 2-3mmol/l.
What did you have for breakfast as some people are more sensitive to carbs in the morning. I know you said you were trying low carb but about how many carbs are you having per day or per meal.

Hi, I'm type 1 on insulin, I have the same problem and it's related to liver pumping glycogen. As soon as I get up I have the same problem called dawn rise. I put a couple of units of insulin in when I get up and remainder just before breakfast. This works for me. Maybe discuss it with your medical team. Hope this helps.

Its tough when you feel deprived snd you get a rise in the BS monitor.
However i tell myself that my body is just like a kid and wants treats and cant have them . So hopefully tomorrow it will be better.
it could be tiredness as i think sometimes we sleep better than others so our body produces sugar for energy.
The others know more but you are doing so ao well.
Please please do not be threatened but use it to see if insulin is right for you.
It should be your body your decision and it might be for the best.
There is support here. I hope you feel it too
I am really delighted by the support i have here.
I feel safe and I hope you get what helps you.

I'm not counting the carbs yet as I only started a few days ago. I am trying to eat things with low carbs but I am a very fussy eater. I dont like many vegetables, dont eat meat (dont like the texture but love the taste) except for the middle bit of bacon, dont eat eggs. So I decided to cut out all sweets, biscuits, cake and crisps, sugar in tea and coffee and use a smaller plate for dinner initially to see how it goes. And it was going really well until the late breakfast today. I have been eating two weetabix with milk for breakfast and have got good readings on that. I cant do anything else for breakfast because I have to go to work early to get a parking space, so eat there. I've just written off today but havent eaten anything on my naughty list, so that's a step forward. Maybe tomorrow will be better. I do appreciate all you lovely people trying to help me. Thank you

Thank you for this - I'm trying to tell myself not to be a whiny kid and just get on with it. I really really dont want to go on insulin as I'm scared of needles and couldnt inject myself every day. Plus, I drive every day and know there are lots of rules around taking insulin and driving. I wanted to go and eat every naughty thing I could find in the kitchen but have managed to control myself and settle for some cherries. I know they arent great but got to be better than sweets. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better, Thank you for listening.

Im that whinny kid . I allow it though
because its all new , frightening and driving me to get a better life. Im not scared of needles but im scared of meds and Hypos. Ive had one hypo post op i think where i was shaky snd uncontrollable and unable to hold a glass.
Yes there are rules around insulin but many manage it well. There is so much though so I would be really thinking about what i could manage perhaps a CGM and maybe a pen would be easier than an injection . i know its similiar but not the same as drawing up units and injecting it. Although its a needle its much thinner.
As for treats it might be your good on fruit. its worth having what works for you.
im am so fat too so I really must try.
i guess i just hope now that i get through until morning . my next meal.
i know low carb is a massive change i hope the fasting between meal gets easier.
i miss take aways and crisps and just easy go to
like things on toast.
Tonight i had butternut squash instead of s jacket potato and thst was delicious.
However its a light meal. Lunch was salad and cheese and breakfast was a low carb muffin not good as it was sweet coconut bun with one rasher of bacon . I will not do that one again. Still you win some you lose some. Good luck
