Hello all, I am a little ashamed to admit this but I really do drink way too much diet coke, before I was diagnosed with diabetes I would easily drink 2l a day, my wife recently said to me, where has all the coke gone, looking back I had no weight issues nor any other issues like im having now, so what is in diet soda / coke thats so bad and what would you recommend a healthy dose or is it just best to give it up completely ?

Thanks.

There's nothing very bad about diet soda. It certainly doesn't by itself cause weight gain.

You'll find some arguing that it can have bad impact on gut microbiota but the evidence IMO seems very weak and contradicted by other studies.

You'll find others arguing that it's kind of a gateway promoting the consumption of high-calorie sweetened etc etc food and drink. But - ditto re evidence.

In any case, it's way way better than drinking full sugar-sweetened stuff.

Thanks Eddy, yours right! 🙂

I think it's poison but that's just me. 🙂 A family member is addicted too. It's just transferring one addiction ie junk food onto something that seems 'healthier.' I did used to drink it and then all of a sudden I couldn't get it down my throat I'm glad to say or I'd still be drinking it I'm sure. Horrid stuff imho.

I drink diet coke.
Never really been am issue for me.

The diet version is better than full fat as far as calories go but both versions aren't particularly healthy choices - just think of all the caffeine in 2L of coke 😱

I must admit I love Pepsi Max (caffeine free) but I've ditched it totally now since my diagnosis. I can't say I've missed it....................yet.

I’d probably try and swap some of it, for fizzy water or squash or water, especially if you feel like the caffeine is affecting your bg / energy / sleep etc. Of all the things to have too much of though, diet drinks feel fairly low on the list of concerns.

It's a difficult one.
There is only so much water I can drink.
Likewise with herbal teas, tea, coffee, then it's fizzy drinks or squash.
After that it's stuff that starts to have calories in it, like soups and broths, or beer!

No need to give it up just cut down on your consumption.

Drank diet drinks from day 1, like them & enjoy cold diet coke in summer months, also like Aldis diet lemonade & keep one in car for journeys out. Just don't pay any attention to scare stories about artificial sweetners in them.

I actually agree somewhat, its just an easy way for me to get a caffeine fix.

hats a great idea, I mean diet lemonade cant even be bought in a pub can it, I never drink full fat coke. I used to when pre diabetes.

We had a 3 hundred and whatever ml bottle of diet 7Up on a Tesco meal deal I got from their Petrol station last week whilst husband putting diesel in the car last week for us to eat/drink whilst driving up to Doncaster for a family 'do' at the weekend. I've had 7Up very occasionally in the past on holiday abroad but not 'diet' before. Really tangy and lemony (which surprised us) so really thirst quenching and we both really enjoyed it.

Other than diet tonic water, diet coke is usually the only carb free offering in pubs - and though I think that 'Fevertree' tonic is bloomin lovely - carb free it ain't! (and I have always hated coke even before diabetes struck)

Thats interesting, I will try that sometime. Thanks.

FYI all, I have had very little diet coke today as ive really been over doing it so bad I get a migraine / cluster style headache so today Ive had just the one glass.

Vast amount of caffeine in Coke isn't there??? For some strange reason, I do know that Pepsi Max which is supposed to be free of this that and the other, has always sent my BG into the stratosphere and as I only ever drank it when there really was no better choice for a woman who has never liked the taste of any such thing, I haven't drunk any for 20ish years. No loss.
