Not in ketosis anymore?

I got some ketostix when I started the Newcastle Diet on 9 Jan and have been testing twice a week since then. So far all the tests have come back maroon (definitely in ketosis) but this morning there was barely any change from the neutral, starting, colour. I'm assuming this means I'm currently not in ketosis but I'm not sure how that can be - I'm still eating only between 600 and 800 calories a day, and way below 100g of carbs each day, I've still got 2 stone or so to lose so I'm sure there's still loads of visceral fat to be used.

Is this what happens with Ketosis? You go in and out of it? Is it best that I should be in Ketosis all the time until I've reached my target weight? How do I do this - eat even less?? Am a bit confused!

I was before the Newcastle Diet was a recognised thing though, it was just when the original news hit the papers.
Certainly things change during the diet, anything from 1 to 3 weeks is around where you change from using stored glycogen reserves, to actual body fat burning, so I'd expect differences, including slowing down of weight loss, (fat has twice as many calories as glycogen, and glycogen is stored in water, so you lose that as well initially.
 
I have to be honest, I really don't know much about ketosis and I have only tested myself a couple of times, but just wondering what you had to eat a few hours before the test or the evening before, if it was a morning fasting test? If you had slightly more carbs for that previous meal, then perhaps there were enough for your body to use those rather than burn fat..... Or perhaps it was a duff test strip....Or perhaps dipping ins and out of ketosis is normal... Just wondering if you went over the 30g of carbs at the previous meal which I have read is the tipping point.
Generally keto diets work on a much lower daily carb intake that your 100g so I would guess those extra carbs are causing you to essentially be running on a hybrid system, where you run on fat some of the time and carbs at others. This still should allow/result in weight loss.... but you are just not burning fat all the time.

Pee sticks measured wasted ketones. The longer you are in ketosis the fewer ketones are wasted so your sticks will stop registering.
Blood ketones are a better (although more expensive) way of checking.
You'll need a monitor if you want to check those.
I use this one but not cheap.. 80p per test.

Hmm, that's something to consider, although I only had 48g of carbs yesterday all day, and breakfast this morning (before I did the ketostix) was strawberries & greek yoghurt (14g carbs in total) so I'm not sure it's that, but maybe? I also tried 2 test strips in case the first one was duff, but nope, same result.
 
As I understand it, the body's metabolism will switch between using ketones or glucose for energy based on what's available. IE during fasting it might start using fat to make ketones for muscles and other organs that can use them for energy. I don't really worry about it...
 
I think I've worked out what's happened. I've just been looking online at Keto stuff, and about why people fall out of ketosis and how it happens. Put very simply, it seems you need to reduce carb intake to between 30 and 50g a day to go into ketosis and if you eat more than that, it can rapidly take you out again. So I had a look at my food diary and, sure enough, two days ago (Tues 31 Jan), I gave blood and decided that, even though I'm on the diet, I would have my packet of Mini Cheddars and two fingers of Kit Kat after (the nurses won't actually let you leave until you've eaten and drunk something sweet), and that, plus what I'd eaten that day anyway, took me up to 89g of carbs. I shall test again tomorrow (as I'm only having 46g of carbs today) and the day after to see if it picks up again.

And I'm back in ketosis this morning! So that's what happened - how interesting! I've also lost a pound overnight, so things are back on track again.
