Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Type 2 diabetes. Managed to reverse the condition through diet and weight loss but have not been strict enough recently and grown complacent. Have now got fasting morning glucose level of 6.8 up from below 5 and lots of neuropathy in feet, and hands. Struggling with diet. Would appreciate tips for low carb gluten free bread, snacks and meals etc

Welcome to the forum, I believe there are a few people here who are gluten free with their diet. The only things which come to mind at the moment are black bean or edamame bean pasta which is gluten free and pretty low carb.
Also the Nature Valley Protein nut bars are low carb and gluten free.
This link may help with some menu ideas as long as you make some substitutions for gluten free alternatives but you probably have a good idea of what those would be. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
How long is it since you had an HbA1C as that would give you a better idea of where you are now and how much work you need to do.
Doing some before and 2 hours after meals may help you identify some problem meals and foods if your increases are more than 3mmol/l or more than 8mmol/l 2 hours post meal. Peoples tolerance to carby foods can change with time.

Congratulations on managing to reverse your diabetes, but sorry to hear that things have drifted a little since, and you’ve gained back some of the weight you lost.

Are you aiming to lose the weight again? Do you have a weight loss target?

How long ago were you diagnosed?

Have you had your pulses checked regularly? How long has your neuropathy been building up?

Many thanks for yr reply and the tips re meals, snacks and testing. Last HbA1C was done last August, 38 (20-41) normal. Previous test was normal also. My glucose testing kit was broke and I had asked for a replacement but as previous test was normal this was refused but Surgery did agree to do the HbA1C in August and as this was normal I was advised that I could not have a replacement tester so I bought my own. Not sure if I should ask for another HbA1C test- how often should this be done - is it annually or every 6 months?

Thank you for your reply. I have not put on much weight - I am still about 9 stone 5lb and 5.6" tall. I put myself on a strict diet and went down to 8 stone 12lb. I was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and this was the reason that I went on a strict diet and lost the weight. At my heaviest I was 11 stone and taking Metformin. My last test was negative for diabetic retinopathy. The neuropathy has been building up for several months and comes on most in the middle of the night. I think my problem is a poor tolerance to sugar and carbs and I need to be far stricter with my diet as I have grown complacent. I had the neuropathy in the past and got rid of it more or less. I know neuropathy can be caused by other things besides diabetes but this is the most obvious cause. I am going to concentrate on my diet and see if things improve.

As your HbA1C is now normal the 'neuropathy' could be caused by something else, have you had your vitamin B12 checked as with a vegan diet you may be low as many people get B12 from meat and eggs.
Even your morning readings are pretty normal so your diet has obviously been working for you.

I would definitely contact your surgery.
A hba1c of 38 in August to severe neuropathy now is very fast.
Many on here have been years undiagnosed with no ill effects.

Hope you get in well with it @Burstock - but do go and get things checked if your symptoms don’t improve.

Let us know how you get on 🙂

An annual hba1c is normal but don’t assume everything is related to diabetes, speak to your GP about your symptoms and see what testing they advise.

Hello everyone - new here . Ive been type 2 since 2014. had a bit of roller coaster - rapid weight loss 2 years ago and HBAc1 now 53. but Peripheral Neuropathy since last April. Lost sensation in left leg of temperature , difficult mobility and been waiting for nerve conduction test since August . No reflexes in knees either. latest eye check showed some cell damage too. Not feeling optimistic.
