Hi. New here and just wanted others to talk with regarding the condition and how others cope...especial with whats good or bad to eat. Boy do I miss things like Steak and Chips !!

Hi and welcome.

Plenty of people happy to chat here. :D Have you been diagnosed long and are you on any medication for your diabetes?

No reason why you can't have an occasional steak and chips with a few modifications..... Once in a blue moon I have a nice rib-eye with celeriac chips (lower carb than potatoes) and tastier with a large plate of salad and a big dollop of coleslaw. It is very low carb and has minimal impact on my BG levels. I could probably eat like that every day for my diabetes but my finances won't allow it and it would no longer be a treat. Plus there are plenty of other things that I also like to eat. We have one member who has steak or chops and mushrooms for breakfast sometimes.

The steak is fine, chips not so good. Salad and coleslaw or veg a better choice. However no need to deprive yourself as lots of tasty meals still possible. May take a bit more planning and cooking from scratch to eliminate hidden carbs.
Have a look at this link, it is a low carb approach which many have found successful. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
However what approach is suitable for you depends on a number of things like what medication you are on, what your HbA1C is and if you need to lose weight.
A bit more information about your diagnosis would help people tailor their replies.
I was beaten to it as my keyboard died all of a sudden.

I have bags of stir fry from Lidl in the freezer - they come in 3 different styles, I only use two lowest in carbs, but I need to stay low, and they are very good with steak - or chops, or chicken. Sometimes I have mushrooms as well, and I never even think of chips.

Wow I am a bit disappointed in the replies you’ve had so far. 3 posts and 3 people advocating low carb without any information on @keeezy current diet regime, preferences or most importantly medication!

What is it about steak and chips that means it’s off limits for you @keeezy? Do you take any medication and do you test your blood sugars? If you’re on tablets or managing with diet, have you tried eating steak and chips and seeing what your blood sugars do afterwards? If they go too high have you tried things like having the steak and chips whilst out for a nice long walk if you’re able to exercise to burn off the glucose?

Welcome to the forum @keeezy

How long have you been living with diabetes? And how have you been finding things?

Test and see what you can handle. Maybe start with a small portion of chips with steak.

I find I can eat a modest portion of fries/chips/potato without my BG going up or staying up. I found this out through testing.

I will eat potato in restaurants if it comes in a meal. (I.e a small amount in a sauce)

Are you on any medication?
