Hi All

My son is newly diagnosed T1, only 1 week ago so we are currently learning about carb counting but have not yet implement it. That's coming at the end of next week.

My son is doing amazingly well and seems to have just taken to it and has already started preparing and injecting his own insulin. The only issue is, he's a snacker! Currently he has, breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper and is allowed a Midmorning snack and midafternoon snack. He's still getting hungry so just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for no carb, no sugar snacks that he could just have whenever he's hungry that wouldn't impact his levels? He's allowed sugar free drinks so I'll likely make ice lollies out of these drinks but just wondering if anyone had any ideas and if this is even advised.

Thanks

Craig

Welcome @craig1984 and sorry you’ve had to join us. The hunger is normal. Your son’s body has been starving and now it’s trying to rebuild itself. I remember being really hungry for weeks. It does decrease as things settle.

Once he’s used to things, he can have carby snacks (and inject for them if necessary) but some no/low carb snacks are Babybel, other cheese, nuts, cold meat, hard boiled egg, raw veg and a dip, etc. He might also be able to get away with snacks with a few carbs without an injection. Oatcakes, rice cakes, plus cheese or peanut butter, for example.

Welcome to the form 🙂

I was suggest fruit and veg until you are both used to things and then your son can inject for a carby snack. Fruit like an apple or a pear are good. Bananas are higher in carbs. A handful of grapes/raspberries or blueberries are also good

Hopefully some of the parents in your situation will be along to comment but in the meantime this thread might help.

Does he have a Libre 2? If so you could get him a MiaoMiao (I got one with a discount from here recently: https://diabetes.gifts/the-perfect-christmas-gift-for-type-1-diabetics/) and then you can track the impact the snacks have on him.

I found I can snack on things with negligible carbs with no impact. So I eat:
- Pepperami
- Cheese cubes
- Salami
- 1 sq dark choc
- coffee with drop of milk and sweetener
- BBQ chicken pieces (those precooked ones from Tesco)

Hope this helps.

Hi and welcome

I have a 12 year old who was diagnosed age 8. We do big meals including dessert/sweets so that cuts down on the need to snack but even then there are times when he’s a bottomless pit.

Things that are no carb snacks
Cheese
Eggs - hard boiled, fried, scrambled, omelette
Cooked meats
Nuts

Low carb
Some snack bars come in at around 10g carbs
Wotsits, skips and other crisps like snacks that aren’t straight potato are often 10g or under
Satsumas - about 5g each

Protein bars are low carb but mostly taste horrible and are expensive

Once he’s settled again recovering you’ll get more of an idea of what normal hunger is for him. As has been said it’s not unusual for newly diagnosed diabetics to need to put back on the weight they’ve lost and so be extra hungry.

At the moment don’t worry too much about fine tuning things. It will take a few weeks or even a couple of months to get to know what ratios to put him on. Just keep records of the carbs he eats along with the insulin given and the team will help get him sorted

Cheetos multipack crisps are only about 6g carb. A satsuma is about 5g. Fridge raiders chicken pieces, or the pepperami sticks or pieces, (or you could slice some extra meat and leave in the fridge but assuming he needs things for at school too), small sticks of cheese, little pot of blueberries or raspberries are all barely any carbs or a small apple is about 10g carb. Cucumber/pepper/carrot sticks with peanut butter /soft cheese / other dip won’t need another jab too or kvarg/protein yoghurts tend to be low carb. Lots of bought ice lollies are only a few grams of carb too but read the labels
