Hi.
I changed my diet to vegan earlier this year but would now like to try to have a low carb diet aswell to help lower my hba1c levels. It's currently at 80 which is better than it was 6 months ago at 87. I was hoping someone may have some vegan keto meal plans they could share with me to give me some inspiration and help me start lowering my carb intake. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and for any help that's offered.

Diabetes UK has a Vegan meal planner here, though it’s not
particularly low carb, and certainly not keto.

Some of the Bosh vegan recipes we use, like broccauliflower cheese, could be tweaked to make them pretty low carb I think (though some others are pretty carb-heavy 😱 )

Good luck developing a plan that works for you. 🙂

Isn’t keto considered to be a concern with t1 now with dka? I would van love to follow and looked at buying keto test sticks to self check, am t2 but wary as always been told need some complex carbs/low GI.

Craig who is asking is T2.

I am neither vegan nor keto, but we eat quite a bit of vegan food in the house.

Some T1s are happily keto, though it’s not an approach that has ever appealed to me. Dietary ketones are different to absolute-lack-of-insulin-with-high-BG-ketoacidosis as I understand it.

There is an article on the website and healthline warning risks but if vigilant I can’t see why it can’t be done, I am veggie but surgical team want me to go vegan because of my pancreas issues. I am about to start insulin for t2 so bit anxious about making sudden changes as I get neuro blackouts as well so nice and stressed
The articles talk about keto causing dka if carbs are pushed too low, throughly confused now.
Thank you for reply!

You’d need to take basal insulin to account for glucise trickled out from the liver. And there may well be conversion of fats and proteins that would need covering with insulin too.

I’ve not really ever considered it so am just guessing to be honest!

I'm not necessarily looking to go keto just looking for ideas I can use to help reduce my carb intake.

Sounds good then, look at low GI then too as that’s what my team have always talked about from day one, focusing on complex carbs that digest slowly.

If you are going to try low carb/keto then be very careful if taking insulin as blood sugar levels can drop fairly dramatically when not eating excess carbs.

Hi thank you, have been looking into it more and start insulin tomorrow so now not going to try keto especially as apparently now have a cardiac issue so going to hold on any changes until I can see a dietitian, really appreciate your reply, have a good day!

That is something repeated often and with great sincerity and anxiety - but we do not need carbohydrate for anything other than a bit of interest and colour/variety in our diet.
We do need protein and fats, and ketosis is not the same as ketoacidosis, as the former is good, and associated with lower blood glucose whilst the latter is bad and is frequently associated with high blood glucose and some more unpleasant symptoms.
I have asked about the food choices best for vegan type 2 diabetics and never got an answer.

I am following a transition to a vegan plan with support from a dietitian (from being vegetarian), the vegan recipes on the diabetes U.K. site are my go to.
Vegan and vegetarian diets are harder to do as type 2 because many of our protein sources contain carbohydrates so it’s very difficult to reduce carbohydrates easily but it does help if you prepare food at home to reduce added sugars and processed carbohydrates in your diet.
I have been advised low GI is best not keto or no carb because we should have some complex carbs, by following this plan I have dropped 27kg since May 2021. I am moving to insulin because of issues with my pancreas following gallstones being misdiagnosed as Ibs.
My concern is dka and the risk to the kidneys and there’s now a few articles warning of these risks both in U.K. forums and USA as well, most link to type one but urge caution with type two diabetes as looks like research is still going on.

Forgot to ask where is your original post? So can take a look and see if help? There’s a vegetarian and vegan diabetic page on Facebook but is mainly American members who do discuss eating lots of fruit based on a plan popular in their country.
