Hello , I've only been diagnosed since June, so trying to come to terms with my diagnosis and what to do and not too, eat, drink ect.. But good news as that I've managed to bring my levels down from 115 to 65. Any advice for Christmas as I do like A G&T but not sure if sugar free tonic is still ok

I have the occasional G&T with Fever Tree tonic, and don't see any rises in BG. In general, for various reasons (Due to the way we process alcohol), having a few drinks causes my BG to drop down into the 3s when combined with a walk home from the pub. Makes me feel quite giddy!

That's a great reduction!

It does contain some carbs, I use a low calorie Fever Tree tonic, but not a huge amount. I'd advise testing to see what happens - the first time I drank alcohol since being diagnosed I was wearing a sensor and surprised to see that levels dropped when I drank.

Thank you, you've Been so helpful appreciate all the advice. Thanks

I would be wary of Fever Tree Tonic as it isn't low carb and it contains fructose instead of regular sucrose. Fructose (fruit sugar) in the absence of the fibre from fruit is actually believed to be worse for fatty liver and therefore Type 2 diabetes than sucrose from what I have read, so personally I would steer clear of Fever tree.

Gin is carb free and a slimline tonic is too so I always go for slimline these days. When I was first diagnosed I tried the Fever Tree and it definitely spiked my levels. I am Type 1 so without injecting insulin it is pretty obvious when something contains carbs.

Thank you so much Rebrascora, you guys are amazing .Honestly I'm so greatful for you all taking time to answer my questions.

No worries. If you like wine, then a glass of red or dry white (Champers perhaps since it is the festive season) is also low carb and in fact all spirits like brandy or whisky or rum as well as gin, with low calories mixers are fine. Beers and ciders and liqueurs and cocktails are higher carb so not the best choice. It doesn't have to be all sack cloth and ashes 🙄 just do be aware that the alcohol will lower your self restraint with regard to food, so be wary of having a glass or two of whatever your tipple is and then hitting the sausage rolls or mince pies with gay abandon. Stick to cheese (and olives if you like them) if you feel the nibbles coming on... Both are low carb.

I find it's quite difficult to avoid Fevertree in most bars these days - they seem to have captured the market. Sauvignon blanc is my tipple of choice when out and I save the G&Ts for home.

Thank you so much, Making all low carb goodies this year so can indulge a little with wait loss in mind.. All of the above good for me. Thank you so much and definitely champagne to start the day( or a good prosecco my sister and I Traditional treat) Sounds like your my kind of person again Thank you

That's why I suggested testing. I have no liver problems, and a G&T with a light Fever Tree doesn't cause my blood sugar to go up at all. As has been said, it's hard to avoid it in many pubs/bars.

It is worth asking for a Slimline rather than a Fever Tree as personally I don't think the Fever Tree is the best option for diabetics and if people specifically request a Fever Tree then the brand will just grow and there will be even less choice of alternatives. I think the marketing of Fever Tree as a "healthier option" because it uses "fruit sugars" is very misleading and I wouldn't use the brand for that reason.

All true - Schweppes Slimline tonic has the least effect on blood glucose and I've been personally proving that since 1972.

However - Fevertree does taste blooming nice, presumably because of the sugar ........

To be honest, I'm not overly fussed. I prefer the Fever Tree tonic (I find the Slimline stuff disgusting), and the fructose content is not in any way at dangerous levels, especially as I tend to only have 1 (And then switch to scotch) and split it between two drinks (Something like 6g of carbs). I tend to find fruit doesn't cause my blood sugar to go up at all, and I quite often eat Apples, Oranges and berries.
