There are two tests that would be done, c-peptide and GAD antibodies. The results when taken together can possibly give a diagnosis but sometimes it is not all that clear cut and they need interpretation by an expert. But still worth asking for them as the results can take quite a long time to come back as not many labs are able to do them. The samples of blood have to be frozen soon after being taken so you may have to go the hospital phlebotomy dept.

Ok thankyou for explaining I will contact my gp to speak to the doctor asap many thanks

Ok thanks for explaining inka that’s very interesting and you have explained it fair better than google haha
I will definitely ask the doctor for a extra test
Would it be another blood test?
Lou

Yes, a blood test from your arm. They should test two things - C Peptide (which gives an idea of how much insulin you’re producing) and the Type 1 antibodies test, which looks for GAD and other Type 1 antibodies. I’m Type 1 and I have two of the Type 1 antibodies.

Oh ok I understand I can’t believe how much I am learning from you guys
So are you classed as LADA then? Or are you type 1 ?

I’m Type 1. I had the extra blood tests as part of ruling out a rarer form of diabetes called MODY, but don’t worry about that. My blood tests proved I was Type 1 due to the antibodies and the very low C Peptide, which showed my insulin-producing cells had been decimated by my own immune system.

Even if you’re not LADA/Type 1, it would be worth ruling out and would give you more clarity.

I have just been tested for LADA . I have GAD antibodies present but my c peptide came back normal . My GP said that because my c peptide was normal we can rule out LADA .
I am confused as to why GAD has come back abnormal.

I can’t answer for you as an individual, but for me my consultant said the presence of two or more antibodies indicated Type 1. There’s a chart somewhere which shows C Peptide levels related to types of diabetes. I had a quick Google but can’t find it. I think @EmmaL76 might know the one I mean.

So, if I were you, I’d find out your actual C Peptide level in numbers and also the same for the GAD antibodies.

@Inka maybe this one ?

Hi @JueB it’s horrible isn’t it, I have low tilter gad at 55. Some say that makes me 100% type 1, one consultant said types 2’s can have gad. Currently I’m LADA but have been told if I continue without insulin I will be changed yet again to a type 2. Not true that cpeptide is a definitive answer In all cases, It’s just a useful tool for a diagnosis. Unfortunately some of us don’t play by the rules and sit in the grey area of diabetes. My c pep has been done 3 times and each time has show to be reducing slightly , but still in the normal. Type 1 (LADA ) can be developing over a decade in some cases so requires monitoring sometimes for a considerable length of time.

AFAIK no-one has ever had any interest in testing either my C-peptide or whether I have or ever had, antibodies.

Hi guys sorry I didn’t reply to your messages I have had a bit of a wobble the last few days. Still feeling rather confused and disheartened unfortunately
So I took the advice given and instead of cutting out carbs I made sure that I was eating the recommended amount a day by keeping a record.
But my readings on Friday and Saturday was been all over the place. My morning readings have been consistently high since testing between 9-7.4 and my readings after food slightly lower. But on these days I have had morning readings of 7 and 7.1 and this morning 6.1. But the readings after food have been really low
Friday 3.2 re tested in case a mistake then it was 7
Saturday first test was 2.4 retested and was 4.3 then a hour later was 7 again
I have no idea what’s going on with my levels and don’t know whether to be concerned. Thankyou in advance for reading

I think it can take a while for your body to settle down after a change in diet especially if you have made a substantial reduction in carb intake, hence the recommendation to reduce slowly over a few weeks. Reducing by a third for a couple of week then another third until you get to where you need to be taking account of your readings on your monitor.
Your metabolism may not deal equally with all carbohydrates so being 'all over the place' may depend on exactly what carbs you have eaten. 20g of one carb may not give you the same result as 20g of a different carb and it can also depend on what you ate it with.
Nobody said this was easy but it will get easier.

@LouLou2005 Even in people without diabetes, blood sugar goes up and down within a range. Don’t focus too much on individual figures, look at the trends more and whether a number is in range or not. What blood glucose meter are you using?

Ok thankyou both I understand what you are both saying and won’t worry as much if the readings are abit random for the first few weeks
I have attached a picture of my monitor

Sorry
