My nurse, who isn't the diabetic nurse but a practise nurse at my GP's surgery has told me that it wouldn't be advisable for me to have the egg. (See my 1st post in the chocolate thread). After looking at the posts of others, do I need to get another opinion? Please help as if i can have a little bit of chocolate then great!

After the great efforts you have made lately, I think there is nothing wrong in a little treat every now and then. A little bit of the chocolate after a meal is not going to undo everything - as long as you don't get tempted to scoff the whole egg in one go!

Everyones aloud a treat. Surely if u have it in moderation its ok. Although gotta say when I open an easter egg I cant stop. But i wasnt diabetic last easter so gonna have to control myself this year!

I would agree with sue and northerner (apart from the year I woofed down a whole large diabetic chocolate easter egg from thorntons and had a very close relationship with my bathroom throne). Shameless.

I had 2 easter eggs a couple of years ago and it took me ages to eat them (instead of scoffing both of them)i just treated myself to a small bit every day or every other day.. as my dietician said the other week, if i wanted to eat a mars bar i could but to make sure i covered myself with enough insulin.. but have always been told that you can eat chocolate in moderation.

Everything in moderation Faceman. I am sure as hell going to have some chocolate at easter - and with such fab results with your cholesterol and HbA1C you deserve a treat.

Small amounts, spaced out is usually the best way to go. Savour it!

dark choc - the darker the better is usually the way to go. Diabetic choc is ok I suppose but all those polyols do like to rush through your system.

Oh and use your meter to check the BG rise after and hour to check you are not overdoing it

Spoke to the Diabetic Nurse at a neighbouring hospital I work for and she more or less stated what you guys have said. Chocolate in modration but after a meal. Looks like I'm gonna enjoy Easter after all!

I agree, all things in moderation. If you want a little of the egg have it. If it is part of a meal and you are on insulin then you will be fine. None of the nurses at my GP practice are diabetic trained and they err on the side of caution.

While I wouldn't say eat sugar by the spoonfull, a number of diabetic cook books have given sugar as an ingredient and the crabs for each recipe is given. It is always good to get a professional opinion too.

Had to read that a couple of times before I got it!🙂

Agree it was a bit clumsy, and I had to edit it a couple of times for it to make sense for my non diabetics here.

Diabetic chocolate

Hi

Someone mentioned diabetic chocolate - this is a pet hate of mine. Never ever touch or eat foods labelled 'diabetic'. It is purely a con to charge you more money. The sweetners they use in these foods do the same as normal sugar albeit a bit more slowly perhaps. BUT the biggest thing these foods do is act as a laxative. Some people say you need lots to get this effect, this is not necessarily true. For some people just three squares of chocolate is enough. Boots the Chemist banned it for a while but for some reason (money I would think) they brought it back again.

If you eat chocolate and actually scoff the whole egg then you will need insulin to cover this amount. Hopefully all those on multi injections are carb counting and you just work out your ratios and inject. (Sounds easy I know but is it ever!!!!)

Ok lecture on diabetic food is over...........😉

crustaceans / crabs / crustaceans

It was the typo with crabs/carbs that gave me a double take, Caroline!🙂

Any mention of crustaceans is good! (Copepod = any one of a group of mainly planktonic, small crustaceans, can be marine or freshwater, but I consider myself a marine copepod. Other crustaceans eg crabs, lobsters, shrimps, nephrops etc are usually better to eat; interesting fact for the day - barnacles are crustaceans, not molluscs, well studied by Charles Darwin, when he wasn't thinking about evolution or earthworms or his own children or any one of many other interests...)
