Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello there, I'm new to your group, but not new to diabetes having been diagnosed in 1999. I am a very naughty Diabetic as I find it difficult to stay off carbohydrates. I would like to eat better, as I could do with losing some weight weight too. I would also like to see my blood sugar levels a bit lower. I feel I need a bit of motivation. Looking forward to being part of your group

Hi there and welcome. You don't have to stay off carbs completely. I try to stick to low carb ( 120g per day ) have to admit I find it hard as I hate veg. Get yourself a carb counter and try for a while. Good luck

Hi there and welcome.
Carbs was my downfall too, but like Snowball I have reduced them to under 100/120 a day and combined with a 1200 calorie diet, so far it appears to be working. I imagine there will be times when like you I will be considered a "naughty" diabetic, but as long as we are mainly on track it should be OK.

Are you taking any medication?

Hello Jenny 65. Thanks for your welcome and advice. It's getting my head around things and looking for something willpower too.
I'm on insulin, novorapid and toujeo and metformin

Hi teailar, welcome to the team and thank you for sharing your concerns with us. You have comw to right place and we are more than pleased to help you! As you mentioned, tou so not have to stay off completely of carbs, it is all about having a balanced diet ( I’m also diagn with diabetes). In regards to your glucose levels being more in a normal range, i would advice tou to speak to your Gp or doctor to see how they can help you make good changes. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your advice, can't remember when I last saw a GP, tends to be Health Care assistants, occasionally a nurse, or pharmacist in my surgery who deals with my diabetic reviews, an appointment is due though

As you are on insulin then you should be able to tailor your insulin dose to your carbohydrate intake to keep an even keel with your glucose levels.
With those medications you need to be careful about the low carb advice as that really is more applicable to Type 2 who are dietary managed or diet and oral meds.

Thank you Leadinlights for your advice, I already do this to some extent

Welcome to the forum @Teallach

Yes as @Leadinglights and @Aben123 have said, as you are on insulin you would need to be careful that your menu and your meds are in balance, and not make too dramatic a change to your carbohydrate intake all at once.

What sorts of levels do you generally see on your BG meter? And do you have a regular BG monitoring programme established? Have you been shown how to adjust the insulin doses you take to match the carbohydrate content in your meals? Or do you rely on fixed doses from your nurse?

Hello Aben123, I've never been taught to adjust my insulin dose to match the carbo intake. when my BG is a bit higher than it should be I raise the amount of insulins I take, if I manage to get thing back down a bit, I reduce the insulin.
My BG goal is 9, I try to keep it around 7. Lately it's been creeping higher, 15.9 being the highest yet. Sometimes I know what's caused it, but other times, I'm surprised when it's high as I feel I've not overdone the carbohydrates.
I inject 4 times a day and test before. Novorapid 3 times and 1 Toujeo.
