Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I guess it’s a reflection on the sheer scale of diabetes impact that there are indeed a lot of newbies. Hi my name is mark and I’ve been a type 2 for a few years initially managing by diet, then when blood count hit 90 by Trulicity injections once a week then now, after it had dropped to 70 but for reasons not explained shot up over three months to 102, here I am hungry for all that the Diabetes UK family can share ! Just started insulin 12 units a day injection two weeks ago and today, being a geek, bravely entered the Libre 2 world. I’m a no legged one armed fanatical Evertonian in a powerchair, supported forever by my ace wife Gill and daughter Rachel and family and friends. Currently a part time consultant with Northern Trains wfh. All the best, Mark

Welcome @efcmark 🙂 What insulin are you taking? Hopefully it will help you improve your numbers🙂 The Libre 2 is a great piece of tech and I’m sure it will help you a lot, especially now you’re on insulin.

Welcome to the forum @efcmark

Great to have you here 🙂

Hopefully the forum will provide a useful sounding board, source of hints, tips and shared experiences, and a safe and friendly place to simply offload and have a bit of a moan and rant when diabetes gets up to its silly nonsensical tricks from time to time.

Do you have much history of diabetes in your close family?

Just wondering if you’d ever been checked for GAD antibodies or cPeptide? The relatively rapid progression to insulin, and sudden changes in A1c might have been your flagging beta cells succumbing to gradual autoimmune onslaught - just wondering if you might be a slow-developing T1 (sometimes called LADA latent autoimmune diabetes in adults)? LADA can look a lit like T2 in the beginning, and even respond to T2 meds, but is much more close to T1 in it’s needs.

Your treatment would be similar to what you are on now, but such is the nature of health economics, and scientific research, that if you have a tick in a different box (because you sort of sit in the middle) you can not be identified as being suitable for certain treatments, education courses, etc

Ah I may have explained badly…. I’ve had this now for three years, mostly diet controlled, then Trulicity as blood count HBC1 spiked at 92 but then dropped back steadily. Then, big spike over three months to 102. Not had any of those tests…..

Hi Mark and welcome from me too.

Ah I may have explained badly
No you explained fine..... I imagine the Trulicity curbed your eating somewhat which is what it is designed to do I believe and that probably allowed your flagging beta cells to recover a bit. Out of curiosity did you have Covid or a Covid vaccine somewhere around the beginning of that spell when your levels spikes to 102 as that could certainly have been a trigger for your immune system to kill off a few more insulin producing beta cells and cause that rise.
Just in case you are unaware, diabetes is categorized by the cause, so Type 1 is autoimmune where the body attacks and kills off it's own insulin producing beta cells (LADA ... Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults....is a slow onset form of this), Type 2 is metabolic, Type 3c is damage, disease or surgical removal of the pancreas etc.
From what you describe I too wonder if you are a slow onset Type 1 (LADA) and you might be well advised to push for GAD antibody testing. Your dose of Toujeo is relatively low and usually Type 2 diabetics need much larger doses because they are insulin resistant..... so there are a few things which suggest that Type 1 might be more likely. Ideally you would want to be referred to a consultant for that GAD testing because GPs have very little knowledge and understanding of Type 1 diabetes. Unfortunately the consultants clinics are under a lot of strain due to Covid which has increased their workload significantly....there is a link between Covid and diabetes which is not yet fully understood and it appears that a lot of new cases have been triggered/detected as a result.

Anyway, really pleased that you have found the forum as it is an amazing resource of knowledge and experience and I am sure you will find the Libre data fascinating. If you need any help in interpreting the results or tips for improving "time in range" or any other advice or support, do shout up..... or even if you are just frustrated and need to let off a bit of steam.... we understand here because we all feel like that sometimes. Make yourself at home and I am certain you will learn lots here which will help you on your journey with diabetes.
