Hi. Started my metformin this morning. 1000 slow release to start with. Have had an upset stomach this afternoon. I am really anxious about going into work and having to run to the toilet but work have been really supportive. Just looking for some reassurance really that things will get better.

I had mild gastro stuff for a few days but it calmed down pretty quickly. I think that's the case for most people.

Hi Sammmm85, welcome to the forum.

You're not alone in feeling nervous as there can be a lot of unknowns when you first get diagnosed but you'll find your way with the right support.

It's quite common to have a few tummy issues when you first take Metformin but many people have had things settle down after a little while. Some people find that it depends when they take their medication and the foods they take it with so worth observing.

If you're finding it persists after a few weeks then it might be worth speaking with your GP re alternatives.

I was lucky with metformin. Never really felt ill. I took it either immediately before breakfast and evening meal at the start. KIt seems that ensuring there is something else in the stomach at the same time as the tablets helped. I have become a bit more relaxed over the years and now take it either just before or a short time after. After the last review I started on Sitagliptin as well as metformin.
