Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Was diagnosed type 2 a couple of years ago and to be honest I haven't taken it as Seriously as I should have.
My reading has shot up to 17 since I was last tested and am now on Metformin and testing daily.
I accept my stupidity but am more gutted because I love real ale which I assume will have to go.

Hi @Neildp and welcome to the forum.
So did you have a recent blood test at the GP which confirmed the diabetes?

Real ale may well have to feature less in your future but all is not lost!
Can you tell us a little more about you, and how you came to be diagnosed initially and what's changed over the last couple of years?

I had a blood test and the reading was 13 so they called me in put me on the drug and gave me a testing monitor. I had a few drinks during the football yesterday and had a nasty upset stomach last night.
I also take Creone as my pancreas isn’t perfect.
My diet hasn’t been great (take always) etc and since the split with the wife a few years ago have drunk more than recommended so I suppose that’s the cause.
Day 1 of a new start ( he said unconvincingly)

Just take each day at a time @Neildp and remember it always Day 1 for diabetics. We've all fallen off the wagon at times, the best thing to do is accept you've gone under the wheels, dust yourself down and climb right back up there again.

No reason to stop your real ale (wonderful stuff, isn't it?!) but try to reduce either the amount you are drinking and/or the occasions you drink it. My tipple these days is red wine as it has fewer carbs, but I still like the odd pint of proper ale now and then.

Thanks I appreciate that

Hi Neil and welcome from me too.

I think the issue with your pancreas and needing Creon should be a red flag now that your BG levels have suddenly shot up and I think you might be wise to ask for a pancreatic scan..... The pancreas makes insulin as well as digestive enzymes and if it is damaged/dying then that may mean that it is also failing to produce enough insulin, which puts you at much greater short term risk than normal Type 2 diabetic, who can usually produce plenty of insulin at least in the early stages of diagnosis but their body has become resistant to it. Not being able to produce enough is a more serious ball game.
You might be wise to lay off the drink altogether until you know the extent of your pancreatic damage. The upset stomach is a concern after drinking although if you have just started Metformin, it may be that which upset your stomach.

My guess is that you may well be Type 3c rather than Type 2 diabetic, due to damage to your pancreas.
How long have you been using Creon and what necessitated it? ie. Do you have chronic pancreatitis or have you experienced incident(s) of acute pancreatitis?

I am going to tag some Type 3c diabetics who may have more input or advice for you.... @soupdragon @Proud to be erratic. Knowing more about your need for Creon and how that came about will perhaps shed more light on your situation.

If it is any consolation, I was a sugar addict and comfort eater pre-diagnosis. It isn't easy but you find different foods/drink to enjoy instead, which don't cause you health issues.

Welcome to the forum @Neildp

If you’ve not heard of type 3c diabetes, don’t worry! You are not alone 🙂

There’s some information about it here:

Glad to hear you are wanting to make a new start. It is a challenge, but you deserve to be happy and healthy, and some of those things we can get drawn towards as ‘treats’ can actually end up making us feel pretty grim - sluggish, de-energised, and weighed down.

Making a few positive changes can give you more energy, a clearer mind, and a brighter outlook. Plus keeping up with your regular checks can mean that any potential problems may be spotted earlier, and can be sorted out sooner. Try not to be disheartened about what has gone before - this sort of a ‘wake up call’ can become a catalyst which prompts forum members to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years.

Hello @Neildp ,
I'm a Type3c following a total pancreatectomy to address pancreatic cancer, which I was unaware of until a tumour blocked my bile duct. So my panc'y has had 'dramatic damage' - damage to the pancreas is the understood reason for T3c diagnosis in some places, rather than autoimmune problems and no production of insulin (T1) or insulin resistance (T2); but I've no prior experience of pancreatic problems.

So this is more of a Welcome, rather than being able to offer advice. I do take Creon, my gastroenterologist documented this as in industrial quantities! Creon is vital for me and when I misjudge it, my carb to insulin ratios become all but useless.
