Steroid Induced Diabetes
Hello ! I'm new here , I have decided to join the forum as I'm on steroids and have been for 5 and a half years and wonder if anyone else is on steroids .
This morning I was told that my initial HB1c test came back at 49 and that this mornings test was to confirm the reading as apparently ( not that I was told ),I've been pre diabetic for a number of years ! It's a bit of a shock i have to say as I was on a mainly protein diet and apart from feeling very tired and recently very weak sweaty and itching not had any of the usual symptoms of diabetes .
I've no idea what to expect to behonest in terms of treatment or if my level of 49 is high or what .
I said to the nurse that hopefully it was a false reading but she didn't think so.
I also have rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory asthma and Airways.
I expect I shall just lurk and read and support others whenever I can .

Thanks for reading .

Rheumy girl.

I think there are a number of folks around here with steroid-induced diabetes and some of them will probably come along. You might like to start another thread with that in the title, to grab their attention.

Anyway, the HbA1c threshold for diabetes is 48 so you're just a smidgen above that.

Clinically, there's sod all difference between being a bit above and being a bit below - "48" is more bureaucratic convenience than a magic line separating the well from the diseased.

You usually wouldn't expect to have any "diabetes symptoms" at an HbA1c of 49 and your excess long-term risk of diabetic complications is probably minimal if it stays around there. I'd say the main thing is to keep an eye on it and follow your doc's advice on management, to keep it from going up.

Good luck!

Thank you for your reply and information and advice . It is very much appreciated .
I have to admit that I'm not all that convinced that the reading is correct in any case.
I don't drink , my appetite is poor and I have been following the principales of the fast 800 diet.
I don't drink , stuff my face with sweet stuff and I cook from scratch with good vegetables , little in the way of bread , not keen on rice or pasta .

I think the steroids are just messing with my system .Yes I've put on weight but that's steroids for you .
Any way thanks again

Rhemy girl .

Steroids can certainly mess with glucose regulation. https://www.diabetes.org.uk/diabetes-the-basics/other-types-of-diabetes/steroid-induced-diabetes

Welcome to the forum @Rheumygirl

Sorry to hear you’ve had a reading a whisker over the Threshold of Doom (TM) :D Yes you aren’t the first new member to have had the unfortunate experience of having been belatedly told that they had previously had results that showed they were at risk of diabetes, but had never been told :(

Let us know what happens with your follow-up check.

Will you need to remain on steroids for the foreseeable future?
