Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all...

Got diagnosed with Type 1 out of the blue about a month ago. My levels are pretty stable and I know what I can sensibly eat but am already incredibly bored with a lot of my lunch (usually sandwich-esque) and I like to snack but am finding this almost impossible as the healthy snacks for a diabetic are not low fodmap so set off my delightful IBS

I've had a look online but there's just so much information I wondered if any has a similar issue?

Thanks in advance!!

You're Type 1, so (in principle) you can eat whatever you like, since you can inject insulin for it. That may be more theoretical than practical at the moment since you're recently diagnosed (so presumably haven't received whatever training is available locally).

That is what I thought but I was told to avoid doing that, I guess they want everything to be more stable first?

They've just put me on a Libre so I think I need to stick to it at the mo

What insulins are you on and are you carb-counting and adjusting your mealtime insulin? Once you get more experience and support, you’ll be able to eat a pretty normal diet as @Bruce Stephens says.

Abasaglar and novorapid. I'm carb counting but haven't adjusted much yet, pretty sensitive to the insulin

So what are your mealtime ratios and do you have a half unit pen?

I'm sure that's right, and it makes lots of sense. I was mostly saying it needn't be like this forever!

A google search suggests a few things might work (depending on you, of course). From https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/fodmap-diet-what-you-need-to-know I could imagine dried meat, cheese, some of the vegetables they list. Those could all be low carbohydrate though whether they could be made into suitable snacks is a different question. I think they could (I'm imagining Greek/Turkish dips with sticks of cucumber, carrot, peppers (OK, they don't list carrots or peppers so maybe those wouldn't be suitable)).

You might try searching the forum for FODMAP. It seems to have come up a few times before and maybe there are suggestions there.

Thank you so much for the input, I'll have a look at the site. I'm sure there is plenty around but it gets quite overwhelming! I will delve into the forums some more

I'm on 1u to 20g carbs (very rough). Its a one unit pen

You’ll find a half unit pen an absolute godsend! It will help you dose more accurately for your carbs but will also be useful if you ever need to do a correction dose. I’ve had Type 1 almost 30 years so my own islet cells are pretty non-existent and I need more insulin than I did at diagnosis, but I still love my half-unit pen when I take a pump break (I use an insulin pump).

It would be interesting to know what their concerns chiefly were, and what issues they were trying to avoid, so that you can understand them and weave them into your self-management. Isit just the self-adjustment of doses they are wanting you to take your time over?

A sandwich-based lunch has been my staple for 30 years with T1, so I don’t see an issue there. Were there specific fodmap-friendly snacks that you were interested in having?
