Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I've got my sugar down from 9 to 7 with the help of tablets. But yesterday, my Daughters Birthday, I had Homity pie and cabbage. There was potato in the pie, so I didn't have any extra. There was cream in the sauce. Low and behold, today my sugar is 8. I haven't heard from a Doctor or nurse, just instructed how to take the Metformin. Am I doing everything right. I keep carbs to about 50 per meal, nothing in between and either green tea or water. Thanks.

50g of carbs per meal is above average for what most diabetics would aim for unless you are just having one or two meals a day but your levels are not too bad. They are still in single figures so not too much to worry about. Low carb is considered less than 130g of carbs a day.
With a pie, you need to consider the pastry as well as the potato. Obviously cabbage is fine and so is cream (very few carbs in cream and I have it in my coffee every morning for that reason.... less carbs than milk and tastes heavenly and the fat slows down the release of glucose from the carbs I do eat and the fat helps to keep me from feeling hungry)

Was that 8 your waking reading this morning? Do you test just before and then 2 hours after a meal to see how your body responded, as that is the approach people find most helpful on the forum for adjusting their diet to what their body can cope with.

I was Diagnosed types and given instructions on taking Metformin. That was 3 months ago., so I've been winging it. I will reduce carbs now I know what level is best. As far as testing, I bought my,own kit and only test before breakfast on a Sunday. So. I'll do more. I don't eat between meals.

You have done quite well despite the lack of support and information about making dietary changes. It would be worth your while to establish a more structured testing regime so you can see what meals you can tolerate. Testing before you eat and 2 hours afterwards will tell you if you can tolerate that meal if the increase in no more than 2-3mmol/l and no more than 8.5mmol/l post meal.
You may find this link helpful for some ideas on dietary changes, it follows a low carb approach (less than 130g per day) which many people find successful. Many people do go lower than that to get their blood glucose to where they want it to be.
