Hello,

Shock phone call from the doc this morning to say I am 'impressively diabetic'! I love that terminology!
I'm shocked because it was completely unexpected. I feel a bit upset and worried but it does explain why I've felt rubbish for so long.

Anyway, I've had a look around the website and found some meal plans, and I've read some threads and found some cookery book recommendations.

Vic, the impressive diabetic!

Hi Vic,

The shock is entirely understandable but it's good you've found this place already as it's invaluable in many ways.

Can you tell us more about how you came to be diagnosed and also if you have your HbA1c to hand that useful for guidance.

Do you have any questions right at the forefront of your mind right now?

Hello there,
what is an HbA1c? I've not heard of that. The doc was v good but gave a lot of info. She may have mentioned that but I don't know! She's mentioned some medication which I can't remember the name of either! I've to collect a glucose monitor too.

I've probably a million questions...at the forefront of my mind at the minute I think is food. So I've ordered a couple of books. I like cooking, I just need to cook the right things now!

Vic

Forgive me for running ahead.

HbA1c is the number that the doc uses to determine whether you've got diabetes or not. It's basically a 3 month average of blood glucose in the blood so it's a more useful diagnostic tool than a finger prick check.

It's good that they've sorted a blood glucose monitor for you as that's not something the GP will sanction.

Do you have your meds already? If so can you look and let us know what they are?

As for food/diet etc what does your normal way of eating look like now?

Hello,

Oh yes, HbA1c is 77! Meds are Glimepiride 1 daily for 2 weeks then 2 daily I picked them up today and start in the morn.

Diet, as in what I eat isn't too bad and will just need tweaking... in the fact I don't eat regularly, quite often I go all day without eating and then wonder why I feel funny! I probably consume a little bit too much alcohol and since Covid exercise has gone out of the window. So next week I'm determined to get back to swimming

The medication you have been prescribed is one than encourages the pancreas to produce more insulin in order to lower blood glucose which is why you will have been given a monitor as the medication can potentially cause hypos (low blood glucose) especially if you have irregular eating. You should read the instructions about taking the medication carefully.
Although you will need to reduce carbohydrates you need to go cautiously at first and use your monitor to check your glucose level particularly if you feel funny or unwell.
Sometimes people think their diet isn't too bad but often what they think as healthy foods are not so if Type 2 diabetic.
Your HbA1C is quite high so you do need to take it seriously and look carefully at your diet.

It is strange how Diddydottytoi has the same HbA1c of 77 and was put on medication, i was diagnosed a month ago with the same HbA1c (77) and was told just to loose weight if i was overweight and eat a healthy diet and would be sent out information about type 2 Diabetes through the post

Thanks for your advice. Yes you're quite right, whilst I think the diet's not too bad something isn't right somewhere so worth having a good look at.

That's odd Jane isn't it? I wasn't expecting this diagnosis. I don't know what I was expecting though. Perhaps you could go back to the doc? Good luck anyway,

Mine was 83, which isn’t much more than 77 and I was just told to take the tablets (Metformin) and lose some weight and ‘stop eating chips’ (Which came across as quite insulting - I got the feeling she thought she was talking to some overweight idiot!) I would have preferred the chance to try getting it down with diet.

Seems to be quite inconsistent how this condition is treated.

Welcome Vic, the impressive diabetic!

Glad that you've joined us on the site and have found it useful so far.

I've found that the doctors approach very much depends on their personal beliefs of Diabetes and also their awareness of your history and any other elements that may impact your success.

Both approaches can lead to the same outcome so it's just about what works best for you which you'll find out as you go along.

Do let us know if you have any questions or concerns and we'll be happy to help.

That's awful, how rude to say that to someone. I hope you are doing ok though.

Mine was 55 and I was asked to take meformin straight away. I did not. I lost 11kg and now my HbA1c is 37. I'm now taking modified release metformin to avoid being shouted at by the diabetic nurse and I read it has wider cardio vascular benefits. . If you go low carb and reduce calorie intake you can get the numbers down.

Doing fine, thanks for asking. After 3 months got the hba1c down to 36 and lost 3 stone...

Hopefully I can keep the hba1c down at those levels!
