I don't get a funny taste in my mouth when hypo, but I do when I am high, if I've got that taste- which is difficult to describe I know that I am high.

there are the most common symptoms of hypo's, and then there are the ones that might be individual to you. It's great if you can spot these

it's weird but i rang up my doc and he said it is like pear taste in the mouth i said i dont eat them so i dunno what they taste is like all i know is it is yuk lol

Im like Nikki get a strange taste when my sugars are high but cant say noticed when i have hypo. Cant describe the taste but its not very nice. Def not like pears cos I like em!!

ketones = pear drops, not pears

Ketones are said to taste and smell like pear drop sweets (not pears the fruit). I have definitely smelt pear drop breath in other people when working in hospital accident & emergeny departments and medical wards, but never noticed it in myself - but it's possible that I've never been ketoacidotic.

ahhhh right once again my GP gets it wrong

Stef, i think your gp may have been worried your sugars were high and you were producing ketones....hence pear drop smell/taste in mouth.

have you been testing, hope you are feeling bit better, you wernt too well the other day?

yes thanks hun i am, i am just starting testing for ketones today as it goes , negative so far , do i need to reguarly test for ketones or just when im ill??

I have been told to test when im ill, and if readings are high without reason. for example, if i had chocolate cake and it was high i would not test! But if i was eating normally and the readings were unusually high i would monitor and only test if they were constantly high for no reason.

I had a cold recently and my readings were not high, but i tested once just to check. I always keep one ketone strip in my meter pouch just in case 🙂

ahh right well i have a cold now but i did test friday and it was negative.. always have spare just incase:D

apparently one of the sytoms of being high is 'fruity' breath. this is how the first aid at work book describes it. i can confirm ive had this taste/smell before but not every time.
