Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone, I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who takes the time and trouble to post here. I was diagnosed mid December with type 2 diabetes, hb thingy of 94 and came to this site to do my learning and research and to cope with the shock and anxiety. Thanks to all of you I decided to go low carb and was kept motivated by the daily posts.
I have just had the results of my 3 monthly bloods and am now 38, just completely unbelievable and beyond my wildest hopes, I have also lost 2 stone without ever feeling hungry! The practice nurse was gobsmacked and said I proved low carb can work. Metformin reduced to 3 a day and to keep on with the low carb to prevent it coming back.
A large part of this success is due to all of you who give your time and expertise. So a very big thank you from a very elated me!

That's fabulous! Low carb and this forum does indeed seem to work for some of us.

Well done @Seagal you've done really well. Always lovely to surprise your medical people with good news because you've made such a positive change to your health!

That’s awesome!!

I’m curious what the logic is for keeping you on 3x metformin daily though if your HbA1C is so good.
Did they discuss reducing it to 1 or what happens at your next HbA1C test and potentially having reversed your diabetes?

Hi @colin and@ Martin, she didn't give a reason and I was too elated to think to ask, I would be a bit nervous to change things too much in case it would rock the boat.
Sadly thinking it over I suspect that they expect me to fail, I have always been very large, dieting on and off for the last 50 years, think I've lost about 29 stone! So when I lose a bit more I'll suggest dropping another tablet... does that sound sensible?

I did wonder about the Metformin as well - I was only on 1000mg (Two tablets) and it got reduced to 1 as soon as my hba1c went down three months later. The GP said if it's still that low next time them maybe we can think about stopping it completely. I wonder if there's any sort of guidelines for how much to prescribe in the first place? (My 83 wasn't far from 94.)

I was nervous when I reduced from 2 to 1 as I didn't want my BG to go up, but it doesn't seem to have done so and quite a few days I forget to take it and only realise when I'm at work.

Missing the odd dose of metformin won’t be much of an issue I’m sure.

Perhaps ask your GP the question about modifying your dosage though.

(Not sure if this was directed at me...)

The GP told me to reduce it... from 1000mg to 500mg a day after my second blood test.

I'm not entirely sure 500mg really has much effect, as the papers I've read seem to imply 1000-1500 has the most effect and after that it's 'diminishing returns'.

Not directed to you but rather to @Seagal

Well done! Great job!

Well done - but your nurse is a bit behind the times - William Banting proved that low carb works back around 1850.

Woohoo, wayhay!!! Nice work @Seagal - give yourself a big pat on the back. Brilliant!

Thanks for this, fascinating, have recently come across the verb banting in some early 19th century novels, have looked him up..the royal undertaker, related to Frederick Banting. I love these links!

Wonderful news @Seagal !

Huge congratulations on your amazing achievement. You have every right to feel extremely proud of yourself 🙂
