Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello , went to doctors a week ago about a problem I thought might be menopause related . Urine and blood tests showed high glucose levels so got a phone call from doctor to tell me I had type 2 diabetes . Was sent a link to diabetes UK website and a prescription for 2 different types of tablets . I'm not sure what I'm allowed to eat ,haven't had any sugary things or chocolate for a week which is hard as I love chocolate and sugar in my tea and I'm trying to stay away from carbs . I'm so depressed and haven't a clue what I'm doing . Any advice would be great thanks

Hi @Mooshogi welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis and that it's making you feel down.
I also thought that the symptoms I was having was the menopause, but my T2 got picked up in an over 50 health check.
Do you know what your HbA1c was? This would have been the blood test that the doctor would have done to find out that you have diabetes.
What tablets are you on? Metformin is one of the first ones prescribed - are you getting on ok with your medication?
I also used to love chocolate, crisps etc, but I've not had any since I was diagnosed as I need to lose weight and get my blood glucose more controlled.
What sort of food do you usually like to eat? I've discovered a love of mushroom and cheese omelettes, Greek yogurt and strawberries/raspberries/blueberries/blackberries, and home made soup, which has kept me sane and fed.
Sorry to hear you aren't doing so well at the moment, ask any questions you have and I'm sure other people will try and help,
Kind regards, Sarah

I don't know what my blood sugar is ,didn't even think to ask Doctor . I have an appointment for a foot clinic in March and I'm waiting to hear about an eye clinic . I'm hoping there will be a clinic to help with diet and exercise . I'm on Metformin and Alogliptin tablets . I have an under active thyroid too and restless leg syndrome .

I see diabetes as a blessing in disguise - even with the insomnia.
I woke at 5am and have breakfasted on mozzarella, pomadore (tomato) con insalata verde (on a green salad). In a little while I will pour myself some coffee. Somehow I always associate early mornings in Italy with that particular combination, though also eating in the garden as the dawn chorus strikes up - though it is rather too early in the year for that here on the south coast of the UK.
Although I needed to take 200 micrograms of Thyroxine every day for a long time, after 5 years of low carbing my thyroid seems to be waking up. Over the last year my dose has been reduced down to 125 micrograms in three stages.

Hi there. I was exactly the same . only been diagnosed 3 weeks ago. I do greek yoghurt with fruit for something sweet . really nice with blueberries and rasperries and I have the ocassional square of dark chocolate . I am on metformin twice a day .

I should ring the doctor to ask what level your blood sugar is . then at least you have a starting point

Hi ,I didn't know we were allowed dark chocolate . I really miss chocolate . Doctor started me off on one metformin a day up to two a day now but eventually I'll be on four a day and one Alogliptin. I like Greek yoghurt and fruit so its good to know I can eat that . I was freaking out because I thought that I'd never be able to eat anything nice again plus I'm a really fussy eater a lot of stuff in recipes I wouldn't eat like smoked salmon , avocados and aubergines among other things . I'm hoping things get easier as I learn more and find a few recipes I like. So relieved to hear I can have the odd piece of chocolate though ,I've been like a bear with a sore head without chocolate , very grumpy lol

So glad to hear it can be a positive thing , I'm going to try and think of it that way too . Would love it if my thyroid got better and I lost weight . Looking forward to feeling healthy ☺

I normally eat foods like lasagne , chicken enchiladas, chicken curries , chicken fajitas basically anything spicy , Mexican or Italian but eat a lot of chips and potatoes and too much sweets ,chocolate crisps , puddings and cakes . I have to admit my diet has been really unhealthy for a long time . I'm not a big eater but I eat all the wrong things . The last 6 months or so though I've gone off a lot of things as things just didn't taste the same . I would normally only eat one meal a day at night sometimes takeaway 2 or 3 times a week as I couldn't be bothered cooking . I was drinking a full 2litre bottle of Coke most nights too but I've changed to diet drinks now and I drinking more water instead . I was taking 3 teaspoons of sugar in tea too but have gotten it down to one and a half tried splenda but didn't like the taste so trying to get down to no sugar in tea . Struggling with veg at minute not a big fan lol , missing sugar , chocolate , white bread and potatoes is really hard . There's a lot to learn ,very overwhelming . Feels like I'm just thinking about the diabetes all the time now , if I get some recipes I like and sort out a shopping list it will get easier ,I hope so anyway lol . Glad I found this forum everyone has been so helpful and welcoming , thanks

People find a low carb way of eating successful for reducing blood glucose that being no more than 130g per day but balanced between meals as a large carbohydrate hit on the system will not help as your body will not be able to metabolise so much glucose and will result in excess in your system making you feel unwell.
There is no reason why you cannot have the spicy foods you like just not with so much high carb ingredients. Finding lower carb substitutes will go a long way. Takeaways are generally high carb, but you can make your own ' takeaway from the freezer' by doubling up when you do cook the curries etc
