Hello all. New to all this, daughter has been diagnosed as type 1. She’s 4 years old and it would be nice to be able to give her some supermarket snacks. Just standard stuff. We’ve got cheese strings and stuff like that but are there any other low carb type snacks out there?

Sugar free jelly

Fridge raiders or other meat snacks, or save a bit of something you have for tea, pieces of sausage or some roast chicken etc, for a snack.

Berries are pretty low, a satsuma is only about 5g

Some yoghurts can be fairly low, and might be okay without insulin for an active kid, just read the labels

Have you been given an amount of carbs to aim for at snacks? Some people say anything up to 10-15 carbs they have without insulin. Others might need some carbs in their snack depending on what their activity levels will be like.

Nice one. Yeah we where told to aim for under 10g carbs. Was also wondering about standard dinners? Is it okay to have say, chicken nuggets and chips??? Or is that bad news.

Sugar free jelly is great for a snack and comes in lots of different flavours. Some fruits likes berries are great for a snack but fruits like bananas are about 15g-20g so are slightly to high carb for a snack without insulin

Your daughter is on fixed doses of 2.5 NovoRapid at the minute I read in a previous thread of yours?

Type 1s can eat a normal diet. Your daughter’s only limitation at the moment is that she’s on fixed doses. On fixed doses you need to stick to the same amount of carbs because that’s what the dose will ‘cover’. Once she/you learn to adjust her insulin, she can eat what she wants within reason.

Type 1 is an auto-immune condition. It’s not like Type 2. There’s no need to go on special limited diets with Type 1.

For snacks, Babybels are good, veg dipped in humus, rice cakes and peanut butter, cold meat, hard boiled egg, etc Again, once you know what you’re doing, you can simply bolus (inject insulin) for larger, more carby snacks eg I had a lovely flapjack at coffee-time today and simply took a little more insulin to ‘cover’ it.

Hi, my daughter will have things like carrot and cucumber - no carb snacks then low carb snacks include: fridge raiders, biscuit, rice cakes, cracker, bread sticks, fruit, packet of crisps. If she would like a big car by snack like a bun we would bolus for that. Hope this helps

It is tricky with a child as young as 4 as their tastes are very different from an adult taste. Thinking of my grandchildren and how fussy they are about what they will eat. Sometimes they surprise you about what they do like.

She’s done so well with her eating. Currently sitting here chomping on a pack of seaweed

That’s right yes. They’ve actually just upped it to 3.0.
How many carbs does that amount of insulin cover? Once you know how to carb count then you can adjust the insulin so she can have the same diet as a non diabetic 4 year old

Well I was looking at her diary and it seems to be 1 unit of that Novorapid will be good for 10g of carbs. So 2.5 units would amount to 25g of carbs? Sound right?

Yeah as that is a ratio of 1:10 then 2.5:25

It must be difficult with fixed doses as a child's appetite can be so variable, from some who don't eat enough to feed a bird (one granddaughter) to another who eats enough to feed a horse.
Don't take this the wrong way but I once looked after a diabetic dog for 2 weeks and it was a nightmare, I was a nervous wreck.

I blew that option a couple of months ago before all this kicked off. I had her convinced they where grapes so she tried one. It ended in tears
I0 can't blame her, I can't stand them either! Have a look at low carb recipes, you may find some great things there, I have a recipe for a low carb molten chocolate cake thing but not sure a 4 year old would tolerate the dark chocolate (although I did at that age) xx

That molten chocolate cake definitely sounds like a bit of her!!! although I just watched her hammer a load of Brussel sprouts! Kids a weirdo
