Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, really struggling with meals. I usually only have 1 meal a day and it's never nutritionally balanced. Loads of takeaways and junk like chocolate and fizzy drinks. I hate veg apart from carrots and peas, don't like much fruit either.

Hi and welcome

Was it a bit of a shock for you, or did you have symptoms? Most people feel overwhelmed at first. Can you tell us what your HbA1c was on diagnosis and if you've been put on medication? Are you overweight and do you exercise? Some thin energiser bunnies also develop Type 2.

However I see from your post that you recognise your diet could be better. Can you ditch the takeaways for home made "fakeaways"? You might like to go through the Food/Recipes forum and the post "What did you eat yesterday" as that will give you ideas and you might find things you would like to eat.

I hope you will see this as a bit of a wake up call, for you to try new things. You might be pleasantly surprised, and many people do say they feel more energised after changing their eating habits. Berries are the best fruit to eat, and I get the frozen strawberry/blueberry mix. I wouldn't thank you for a bowl of kale, but I grill tomatoes and mushrooms. Soup and pasta sauce are also a good way to hide vegetables - it's what is recommended for fussy children.

I hope you find a way to control your diabetes that suits you.

Its not a problem hating veg and fruit. Just eat things like meat, fish, eggs, cream, yogurt and nuts. And if you must have chocolate, then preferably the 85% cocoa type (or the 90% Lindt like I eat) and then only a smallish amount - not whole bars !

Welcome to the forum @metallica19732000

Sorry to hear about your difficult relationship with food - not at all uncommon in those with a diagnosis of diabetes.

Have you always found food tricky? Or can you remember when that began? What sorts of foods DO you enjoy? Some of our friendly T2s might be able to suggest swaps, workarounds and options to make some of your favourites a little more BG-friendly 🙂

There‘s a section on the Diabetes UK website too, called Enjoy Food, which has a number of meal plans, recipes, suggestions and ideas.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ diet that works for everyone, so it’s a question of trying to find things that work for you, your tastebuds, your pocket, your waistline AND your BG levels 🙂

The meat, fish, eggs, eggs cream, yoghurt, nuts and chocolate diet. Is that a thing?
You don't mean on one plate do you?

I think the Enjoy food diet recommended by diabetes UK may address overall health somewhat better?

You have too many wrong foods you like and too many foods you hate or don't like.

You also won't like my advice.

Decide which is more important to you. Future nasty complications such as blindness, maiming, kidney failure or heart attack. Or your food preferences.

Sorry if that seems a bit blunt but you need to get real. This is an insidious condition. Treated properly you can live a long and healthy life and those complications might never come. I am still awaiting mine after almost 20 years but those who ignore this beast can see complications appear far too early. The difference is that I made a decision way back then: I decided to let my food choices be guided by feedback from my meter an hour after I ate. Pretty basic really. I made this simple rule:

I could eat whatever I wanted whenever I wanted but ONLY if I test one hour after I finished eating it. No meter = no treat. It did not take long for nasty post-meal numbers to make some of those treats look less delicious and more harmful. And also for some of the foods I had not liked in the past to begin to look like possibilities.

As a side issue you might like to reconsider one meal a day. That can lead to one big blood glucose spike after that meal. Consider adding two other meals even if they are more like snacks than full meals and make that main meal a bit smaller.
