What are your BG levels like? I too would be concerned about tightness of chest and breathing problems even if mild. DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis can cause breathing difficulties) so if you have been misdiagnosed and BG levels have shot up, that would be a major concern.
BG levels seem fine ( fine for me at at least ) I ate two hours ago . ( very very low carb ) and its back down to 8.5 after rising to 10.5

It's a difficult one because although I haven't had a full blown flare up for over four years, the COPD does sometimes try to rear its ugly head in the form of low level chest tightness for a couple of days

Ok, that puts my mind at rest a bit.
Metformin can cause indigestion which might feel a bit like being tight chested or as you say, it could be a slight COPD flare up. Do you take steroids for the COPD?

not on a daily basis . Only if I have a flare up. so just have an emergency pack of antibiotics and steroids on standby. i do take a daily preventative inhaler though and that has a very low dose steroid in it

Just to post an update on the metformin progress . the breathless symptoms seem to have gone and i've put this down to a small scale COPD flare up . The other side effects ( digestion based ) also so
seem to have disappeared so thats positive . Also I had a blood sugar level of 4.7 today two hours after eating ( 6.1 before eating ) . This seems very good !!

thanks for the replies . All of therm make total sense . I think I will pay for a private c peptide blood test. really keen to get an answer as soon as possible and because of the bad relationship with my doctors i really cant face the long drawn out process of asking them for it . Also like the idea of a normal carb blood sugar test. will try that to get. a more realistic baseline
I'm glad you are getting tested but also get tested for relevant antibodies. C-peptide alone can be misleading. In the meantime this might help a little until your type is clear: Test, Review, Adjust
