Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, introducing myself. I was diagnosed a year ago with type 2 diabetes with complications from triglycerides.
I haven't really tried any support communities before as I have been a little stubborn perhaps, and convinced myself that I couldn't be told anything I didn't already know. But I have an approaching appointment that scares me. I have realised that while I am keeping my blood sugars in check with my medication, I am not really taking care of myself. I think I might need more support than I realised, so i have joined to see what is what.

Hi and welcome
You will find plenty of people willing to offer support and suggestions. It would help us to help you if we knew a bit about you - your HbA1c, your medications and your lifestyle. By lifestyle I mean your eating plan, your exercise, and if life is generally very busy, stressful etc as they all impact on your blood glucose.
For example, I am retired, follow a low carb diet and am generally stress free. My HbA1c, medications and exercise programme are included in my signature below.
Please feel free to ask any questions you may have, and if necessary I suggest you have prepared questions for your coming appointment, for all your medical issues.

I just don't know my HbA1c at this time. I have been told at my last appointment, but I struggle with things that might make me proactive or organised.
Despite the wishes of my consultant, I won't really have an eating plan, and I find exercise difficult.
I have tonight referred myself to mental health services because of a lot of that.
I take 4mg novorapid at mealtimes, sometimes more or less depending on what I eat or if I have to correct. I take 24mg lantus everyday. I take 2x 500mg Metformin twice a day though I struggle to maintain that for the above reasons. Sometimes I miss doses.

Thanks for the information. I think you have taken the first steps towards helping yourself, by your self referral and contacting up. Your diabetes medication should keep your diabetes controlled, as you indicated. Hopefully your referral will give you the strength to help yourself. Best wishes

Your medication is not particularly high whatsoever - though there are different ways of treating Type 2 which don't involve medication but not all of them will ever suit every person for whatever reasons - we are all entirely different and our bodies simply need however much help they need, full stop.

You've started trying to help yourself, so let's all try and help you take it from here!

Sorry to hear you are having such a tough time @StupidSexyFlanders :(

But well done for sharing your sorries here, a d especially for realising the impact diabetes is having on your mental health.

Being kind to yourself, and looking after yourself as a whole person is so important.

Great that you have a flexible insulin regime that you can adapt to your needs, and brilliant to hear that you are able touse your medication to effectively manage your diabetes.

Do you thunk you would be able to write a list of questions or things you want to mention to take to your appointment. It’s all too easy to get swept up in the conversation and questions from the HCPs, and to leave only then to realise that you didn’t mention something you have wanted to.

Hope the MH services are able to offer you effective support.

Keep in touch, and keep sharing your worries here. We want to help and support you 🙂
