Hi, snap! I am also 38 and just been diagnosed with type 1. 2.5 weeks for me, Scary times. Think it was Covid that brought it on.

Welcome to both of you. You could do worse than click on the 'Learning Zone' and register there to find out what you can and/or invest in a book

Ignore the title - it's suitable for the newly diagnosed of all ages.

Hard to stop eating carbs as much, trying to stop eating chocolate and desserts but just had sons birthday so now we have cake! How about you? I used to have dessert in the evening after kids bedtime, that’s out too

You do seem to be looking at what you can eat from the perspective of somebody who is Type 2 not Type 1 where you are presumably on insulin and have been advised on how much carbohydrate you should be having to match your insulin regime.
I hope some of the Type 1 folk will be along to help you better understand the way of managing Type 1
Meanwhile you could look at the Learning Zone on the section aimed at Type 1.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I’ve only been doing this for 2 weeks and am trying to get levels under control, so yes not messing around with insulin levels. Obviously I want to eat all those things and not be restricted but I also don’t want to be high at bedtime. Huge learning curve

I still don't understand how to count my carbs yet. I get really hungry at night time. I am being really strict with meal times and insulin dozes. Hopefully it will get easier. Good luck with everything.

Hi to you both I’m sorry you’ve been diagnosed with Type 1 you must feel pretty scared. I am Pre diabetic and am quite worried as I already have a chronic condition so I don’t want to add to it. I too am hungry in the evening and am missing eating chocolate in fact I’m missing eating everything. I don’t really understand yet what I should and shouldn’t be eating. Good luck to you both.

Welcome to the forum @Foxley 83

It is a steep learning curve after diagnosis with T1. I am another late starter at the age of 53, but now a good few years into this. Once you have your insulin levels under control and you doses adjusted to suit you those chocolates, and cakes will be there for you and you will learn to match the correct amount of insulin to go with what you chose to eat.

It will help us modify our responses if we know what insulins you are using.

Do Tao into the depth of experience on here and ask any questions that arise. Nothing is considered silly on here. Just ask.

Aaargghh - fixed doses of insulin at mealtimes! PITA though that is, you do have to get used to testing and jabbing - but hopefully they'll get you both started on carb counting and dose adjustment pretty soon - do you both have dates when they're going to start you off with this? I sincerely hope it will be before Xmas so you can enjoy any/all the treats you wish to! If not - shout out for help sooner rather than later as we can hopefully point either or both of you in the right direction. (It ain't rocket science but helps if you can do mental arithmetic or at least have an available calculator eg on your phone)

Meanwhile - which actual insulins have they started each of you on?

I’m on meal novorapid 4-6-4 and night time abasaglar at 12. I have another review in early December to cover carb counting so should be able to enjoy Christmas foods safely from then. I’m aware of the principles and was told i can adjust my level slightly if I know I need to based on the meal

Good luck to you too. I’m eating nuts in the evening. It staves off the hunger and they are helping me put a bit of weight back on. It’s best to be strict to start with to get it all settled I agree.

It’s so early that I’m currently on a set dosage but have a little flexibility. It’s important to know I have it under control, so am being a bit patient with sweet high carbs, have another appt in early dec to get more in to carb counting and eating more normally

Do you think to be high carb, it has to be sweet? - we have to account for ALL the carbs we eat, not just eg sugar!

Frankly, I find it easier to cut down on spuds, bread, pasta, rice etc since I'm not a person who needs to have a dessert with normal weekday dinners at home. Nice treat when we go out though, as is a 'starter' course, though I can no longer manage 3 or more courses without even blinking! Of course if you have less of the spuds rice pasta and bread, the nicer tastier stuff that goes with or on top of any of them, can be increased - the same amount of filling for a sandwich, except cram it all on top of one slice, so an open sandwich eaten with a knife and fork - or fold the single slice in half on top of the filling. With gravy dinners, meat, less spud and 2 other veg. Roasts? - only have the roast spuds, no mash. Curry - half the rice, more curry - ditto with eg spag bol - half the spag, more bolognese.

Yes I know that thank you, it’s easier to cut out carbs from desserts though
You can still have some low carb deserts, sugarfree jelly with berries or quark based deserts Kvarg ones are good, low carb high protein but low fat in various flavours or Greek yoghurt with berries.
