Relationship to Diabetes

Hiya all, my diabetes got spotted during a routine blood test in April, and took a while to pin down T1 (I'm 39 and was a bit overweight, so T2 seemed a bit more likely). Been using insulin for about a month now - just a small bit of long-acting so far - and taking Metformin. Finally got round to joining the forum as I'm trapped in my living room with Covid, trying not to pass it on to the rest of my family!
Did my first ketones test this morning as I'm not feeling well, blood glucose readings are higher than I'm used to (9 - 12), and seem to be losing weight just in the last few days - ketone reading was OK though.
Thanks for having me!
Amy

Welcome @amysmith292 🙂 Sorry to her you’ve got Covid. I hope you feel better very soon. You’re doing exactly the right thing testing for ketones. Keep testing both those and your blood sugar. Illness can mean we sometimes need more insulin.

Welcome to the forum Amy, from another late starter (aged 53 at diagnosis). It is good that your T1 was picked up, as it is common for older people to be misdiagnosed as T2.

As you have covid it is not surprising that your levels are elevated, and you are doing well to keep them as you are. Has your DSN gone through sick day rules? If not it is worth phoning them to discuss this, although I suspect as you are managing so well you are already using this.

Do read around the forum, and come back with any questions that you have.
Nothing is considered silly on here.

Another welcome from me @amysmith292

Glad you have found us!

Sorry to hear about your brush with Covid. Hope you recover soon - must be very difficult trying to keep apart from your household.

As @SB2015 says, illness and injury can result in raised BG levels.

If you’ve not had sick day rules provided by your clinic, you can use these from the Leicester Diabetes Centre, linked on t1resources.uk

The OP doesn't have any fast acting insulin at her disposal - how can one apply T1 sick day rules without it?

On the other hand - if @amysmith292 does find she's having any of the effects outlined in the 'Sick Day Rules' which require correction dosing - she should contact her D team asap and tell them she needs fast acting insulin now, not sometime later, and why - please! Presumably Amy - your D team know you currently have Covid? - if not, you really ought to tell them asap.
