Hi, I’m a new type 1 (end of June).
First time ever I’ve got a season ticket and first match is today. I’m guessing it may take at least 90 minutes to get from home to the game on public transport (Newcastle to Sunderland) from door to seat and at least that coming back. My main concern is coming home. Wondering if it’s okay to take my usual insulin and have sandwiches at end of match 445pm ish, travel home then take my usual dose of insulin again and have my dinner at about 7pm? I only need about 1 unit for 40g carb at moment to give you a guide. Other than that I thought that I could eat an apple with no insulin and if necessary eat another apple or 10g carb nuts to keep my BG acceptable rather than take insulin? I’ve been really strict so far about only injecting at meal times. On this note if I did fancy a sweet treat at a coffee shop once in a blue moon is it ok to inject insulin for this between meals?
Thank you for anybody’s and everybody’s insights!

Yes, you can take insulin at times other than meals if you’re eating enough carbs to need it @Andywidd Just remember when you took it and ate, and keep that in mind. Your fast insulin will probably last around 4 hours so don’t correct ‘high’ blood sugars at your evening meal because the insulin you took for your sandwich will still be working to bring that down.

Do extra tests and just keep an eye on things. Remember too to take hypo treatments and snacks to the match in case you need a ‘top up’ during it.

And yes, you can have something to eat with your coffee. This is all normal. All you need to do is go cautiously as you learn more about your diabetes. Err on the side of caution with your insulin doses, and test lots with any change in routine.

Enjoy the match!

Cheers Inka. Fab. As for enjoying the match I support Sunderland - so that may not be possible! However I’ll monitor and take insulin etc with a bit more confidence now if I need to between meals! Thanks again. Andy

Good win for you yesterday. I support the Toon (boycotting) but wish you and your team all the best.

Bruce out!

Thanks Geordie Dave! The football was actually watchable!! Managed the day as well so getting more confident of doing normal things- a lot of helpful advice from the people on this forum.
good luck against the hammers.

Well according to the interwebnet last night - Sunderland played Wigan yesterday and the full time result was a 2 -1 win to Sunderland!

Nah! Not bothered. You know how frustrating it is having Cabbage Heed as manager head coach. The sooner him and Ca$hl£y do one the better. Glad to know you coped and the football was watchable. You could be going somewhere this season. See you in the Championship next year!

I’ve got a season ticket at Blackburn Rovers. Can’t be bothered eating anything while I’m there, but I always carry hypo treatment because of the stress 🙂

Sit in front of the Jack Walker stand with my other wheelchair mates. The people who sold me the wheelchair customised it with a blue armrest support on one side, and a white one on the other. Dangerous where I actually live, there are quite a few Burnley supporters hereabouts.🙂

Good luck for the season Mike. I don’t wear my red and white top as I live in Newcastle. My bg went up during the match -probably like you due to the stress our respective teams cause!
