Today is Wednesday and I haven't eaten a proper meal since Friday but my blood sugars are still 7.1 how is that?

Thanks. Any idea when it will lower the readings?

I don’t know but I’d guess it will keep pumping out glucose as long as it can. It might also increase its insulin resistance as it will believe it’s undergoing a period of famine.

Is there a reason why you’re not eating? Could you eat a small amount for meals?

I went into hospital on Sunday with chest and back pain. Due to feeling ill I haven't eaten since Friday. I was let out Monday. I was on Morphine for pain whilst in there. I had nausea and sickness as well. I have no appetite and as soon as I put food in my mouth I don't like the taste. ( My chest is ok now. ) I'm just not hungry or thirsty.

Your readings could be higher than you would like because you are unwell, the stress of your pain and hospital stay all act to increase blood glucose levels.
The thing you need to make sure is you stay hydrated and try to eat a bit of something even if it is not a full meal. Maybe some soup or yoghurt.

7.1 is OK, I wouldn’t worry about that 🙂

Yes, I would like to say that I agree with the 2 posts above:
Firstly Fasting for a few days is OK (some of Dr Jason Fung's morbidly obese patients fast for several weeks though they do take electrolytes (either sodium + Potassium + Magnesium either separately e.g. as lo-salt + a magnesium supplement. Or in the form of bone broth.
But even if you can't stomach solid food you must at least keep hydrated and get sufficient electrolytes.

Secondly any Blood Glucose reading of 8.0 mmol or less is fine, so don't worry about it as such.
However if you ever want to halt this process (of your liver making glucose for you) in its tracks, then I found having a small smack such as a chunk of hard chees or a single boiled egg (or other zero carb food) should halt it.

Oh and also there are many things which raise blood glucose over which you have no control such as illness, injury, stress no exercise or too much intense exercise.
The others over which you do have some (even if slight) control are include lack of sleep, medications such as statins and steroids and most of all the carbs in your food.

Ah, pain, illness and stress can raise blood sugar too. If you’re unwell you do need to stay hydrated, even if you only sip liquids.
