Relationship to Diabetes
Type 3c
Thanks for welcoming me to the forum. I live in the US. I have not been able to find a group in the US to discuss my diabetes. I have diabetes 3c. In 2002 my home was invaded by a stranger. I ended up getting shot twice at close range. I have spent some time in and out of hospitals. I had extensive damage. The person who shot me is in prison for the rest of his life. In addition to the damage to my stomach I was left with a bullet fragment in my pancreas. The fragment is in the tail of the pancreas. It is too dangerous to remove the bullet. Over time I have developed type 3c diabetes. I also have had a couple bouts of pancreatitis. I am looking for members who also have type 3c diabetes. I started the dexcom 6 last week and I am very happy. Insurance does not pay for the dexcom. I have learned so much about my blood sugar. I would like to find members who have type 3c diabetes.

Oh my goodness @Lovetoread - I am so very sorry you have been through such an absolutely horrific time.

I don't have type 3c - I have just been diagnosed with Type 2 but hopefully someone will be along soon that can share their experiences with you/give you some help.

Welcome to the forum @Lovetoread

My goodness, what a horrific and shocking experience to have lived through. But so glad you did make it through alive.

Type 3c doesn’t seem to be all that well known within the medical profession. We have quite a few members here who live with type 3c - including @eggyg @Hepato-pancreato @martindt1606 and @SianyBee

Glad you are getting on well with the Dexcom G6 - I use that too!

Welcome @Lovetoread I'm not formally diagnosed 3c but as I had autoimmune pancreatitis and my medical notes say secondary diabetes I suspect that I am.

Are you also on Creon as most of us with damaged/absent pancreasses are?

I am type 3c, was type 2 then developed chronic pancreatitis, was on metformin, now on insulin. I also take CREON which has made things a little easier. I changed to insulin last year in the middle of the pandemic, a year on my blood sugars are still not under control. Everything was done over the telephone, the doctors at my surgery did not know what to do with me! Finally, got to speak to the community specialist diabetic nurse, who have helped enormously. I was referred to an endocrinologist, I thought this is good, need to speak with them, but nothing happened. It has been frightening to say the least.

However, L you have had a terrible experience I hope things are better for you. I am thinking about funding the Freestyle Libre to get a better control of my blood sugars

I am not on enzymes but will start them soon. I was on enzymes for a few years and everything was stable for awhile. Now my belly is having issues. Not much is known about my condition. Dexcom is not covered by my insurance but I have access to a fund for victims of crime. I had no idea my sugar as as out of control as it is. My high numbers are at night when I am sleeping. Not much is known about 3c in the US.

Hi i had a total pancreatectomy in 2010. It was not what was discussed pre operation so it was a bit of a surprise and was totally unprepared for life as insulin dependent. Have progressed through many MDI regimes before getting an Animas Pump as we just couldn't get any stability using both long and rapid insulin. Following identification of liver metastasis I switched to the Tslim Pump and Dexcom G6. Not sure how i lived without the G6 it makes everything so much easier to understand - its great to know where your blood sugars have been before eating and to base your bolus on what your bloods are doing, what you have planned for the next few hours and what you are eating. Just love it when I get a run of days over 90% in range with no deep Hypos. Not wanting to make light of what you have been through (put this down to English humour) but when you are on the beach you have a better back story for your scars than i do 😎
