Hi Has anyone here before or after pregnancy had eye injections with a oral sedation? If so what sedation did you have and did it calm you down enough for the injection to happen. I have eye phobias and need a injection next week before surgery x

Hi Sallyhandy20, welcome to the forum.

So sorry to hear about your surgery, especially with your eye phobia. We have a few members who've had eye injections but I'm not sure about oral sedations.

I hope they don't mind me tagging them but I believe @AJLang and @Kaylz may be able to offer some general insight.

Has anyone from your medical team talked you through what's going to happen next week?

While I read the thread I declined to comment as I have no experience with sedatives, while I was anxious before my first treatment (who wouldn't be) I wasn't phobic or anything, the people in the room with me were great at making me feel more at ease and after that first one the rest didn't effect my anxiety as much so sorry I can't advise on sedatives but if there are any other questions regarding it then I'd be happy to try and help xx

Hi @Sallyhandy20, I am an veteran of eye injections, I have never been sedated before an injection though, I personally have numbing drops before the procedure and have done for 4 years, the injection takes seconds. I have had eye injects in a few different hospitals now and depending on the hospital and doctor they do things differently, but have the same result.

Hi I've had diazepam before having an eye injection before. It calmed me down at the time but unfortunately I am needle phobic if someone else has a needle near me (apart from blood tests) so can't really speak for most people's experiences. I would have thought that it would be best to speak to your GP about what it is suitable for you to have whilst pregnant as he/she will probably be the one prescribing if you can have anything.

Hello Sally,
If it's any help to you at all when I had cataract surgery I had no idea what so ever that the anaesthetist had actually injected my eye before the start of surgery. I had plenty of numbing drops first and was staggered to be told he had done the injection as didn't even see it or feel it.

Yup, I'm with @Pumper_Sue. I've had cataract surgery, and the numbing drops they use prior to any pricking or slicing are fantastic, you really don't feel or see a thing. (And in my case, a nurse held my hand throughout, so I could squeeze it I felt any discomfort - I didn't)

Ditto to the cataract surgery and a bit strangely really, considering I'd sat through the video and knew precisely what they'd be doing in which order - I think I hated more because I couldn't see than I would have if I'd been able to see! Absolutely painless procedure though, throughout.

Hope you find an approach and/or can be offered a medication which helps @Sallyhandy20
