hi
my son is 6 years of age and was diagnosed with with type 1 diabetes just under a year ago his school have been great arranging a classroom assistant to help with his insulin and blood checks but recently the school have offered a 2 week summer school for primary 2 and primary 6 pupils we put forward to avail of this for my son and daughter who is in primary 6 we have now been contacted by the school to say that they cant offer my son a place because they have done a risk assessment and he is high risk the are saying he needs one on one care which we disagree with as the summer school runs from 9.30am to 13.30pm and he will need no insulin during this time and would only need scanned to keep an eye on his blood sugars the diabetic team have offered training to the teacher in charge of the summer school but she says she hasn't the time to do the training i feel like my son is being discriminated against because of his diabetes!

Ask to see the school’s inclusion policy. It is legally binding and should state clearly that no child can be stopped from joining in with anything other children can do just because of race, religion, medical conditions etc etc. Diabetes is also covered by disability equality laws, by law the school have to provide a member of staff who is willing to be trained to do whatever is required. They should start sweating if you start asking about these things, if that doesn’t work then arrange meetings with the head and then the governors if you still don’t get anywhere.

My daughter went on a 2 day residential trip when she was 10, the teacher did comment that the amount of risk assessments he had to do to take one diabetic child on the trip was unbelievable, they still let her go though. Good luck 🙂

Have you spoken to your child’s teacher and the head teacher, I would speak to them first, I’f they can manage normally when it’s not one on one then they can manage this. It is likely someone who doesn’t know the details of his situation thinking they are following process, but they aren’t. Hopefully you get this sorted!

Oh that’s good, glad you got it sorted without it having to get nasty!

We had a meeting with the school last week and everything was sorted they relised they jumped the gunand should of spoken to us regarding the care that was needes and they already had a classroom assistant in place

Ah that’s great to hear @gazman2479 🙂
