I was diagnosed with Diabetes type 2 about a week ago. I have been given a Contour Next One measurement device which I am told to use 4 times per day at 08:00, 12:00, 16:00 and 20:00. The first two always fall before I eat, however the latter two are about 3.5 hours and 1.5-2 hours hours after I eat. I read somewhere that the measurements after eating should be done about 2 hours after eating. Therefore, should I be worried about the 16:00 measurement as it is quite late? Should I occasionally test 2 hours after lunch? The readings are set to mg/dl. Where as I see many on here are using other measurements.

Hi @diatribe. There are many opinions on what constitutes a sensible testing regime and as usual all have their merits. Which you use depends on what you are trying to achieve. The regime suggested by your clinic will give an overall picture of your blood glucose levels. You will get your waking and bed time readings and a couple of readings during the day. What it will not do is to give you a measure of the effect of different foods and whether specific things give you particularly high readings. That is where testing before eating and a couple of hours after becomes a useful tool.

Personally i would go with what your clinic wants you to do for a week or two and then review what you have found. Perhaps then you could then suggest a change in testing to look for effect of specific foods. I am a strong believer in working with the professionals if you can.

In UK we tend to use mmol/l rather than mg/dl and most meters can choose which to report as part of the set up procedure. If mg/dl is in common usage in Luxembourg then stick with it so that you do not confuse your clinic. If you ask us for comments on any readings you get, then report them as mg/dl so we do not get confused!

Hope that helps.

Hi diatribe, apart from the morning, most people test 2 hours after they eat so the timings given may just be a guideline based on average meal times.

Worth checking to see what the rationale is so you can adjust accordingly.

Yeah @ DocB - but no-one else on the forum except the Mods and Admin, would even know that @diatribe was not UK based at all, had you not just mentioned it!

I am going to stick to the testing regime and measurements proposed, I was more concerned that there was yet another set of measures to look out for. As for being outside of the UK, well I hope that doesn't cause any problems here. I wont ask Luxembourg specific questions. Thanks to everyone for their comments above.

I had not read your first post when I replied on this one. Doesn't cause me a prob, I can divide by 18! LOL

And don't worry about Luxembourg specific information - it is always useful for us to see how other countries go about things and now and then we get members asking for information about living/working/holidaying in other countries, making direct experience very welcome.

Hi. Don’t worry , we are quite used to people and very happy for them to come this site from all around the world for info and support.
So long as you mention the measurement units in the one your country uses it will be fine , we can do the maths lol or just find a conversion chart :D . It is also good for us to learn how different countries do things.

I think you are right in sticking to the testing regime they requested at least for the time being .
