Relationship to Diabetes
Hi
I know this is a little bit of a strange advise request but i wondered if anyone can suggest the best yogurts for someone with diabetes Type 2 which is also very low in fat and lowers cholesterol? I am trying to find the best option for my Dad.
Also my Dad is struggling when walking, he is quite weak in his legs and stumbles quite a bit, could anyone suggest anything to help. I think his nerve endings in his feet are being affected?
Thank you

Watch out when going for low fat things Aimee - low fat versions of things tend to be higher in carbohydrate and as people with diabetes can't handle carbohydrate well, it's that which we usually need to watch the amount we eat, because they raise our blood glucose and increased amounts of blood glucose is what causes diabetic neuropathy, which is what you are describing you think has happened to your dad's feet. Has he actually had neuropathy diagnosed by his doctor, what results did he get the last time they checked his feet - and when was that, cos we all get them checked once a year along with all the other annual tests we have to have?

Hi, thank you for replying.
I will look out for that with the yogurt.
He hasnt been told its Neuropathy but i feel it is from what I've read. He hasnt had a recent review due to covid restrictions but I've been pushing for him to go. Is there anything that could help him if it is that please? It worries me all the time to watch him walk. He's lost lots of weight being on a new drug but with it lost a lot of muscle.

Have a look at

We went through a lot of options on there.
Low fat/ high carb is probably a thing of the past, there isn't a lot of extra sugar added to things any more.
It seems it's more a product of the fruit added.
Plain yoghurts are all around 5g or so.
If you fancy making some, hemp milk is very good, and very low carb.

Which drug has he been prescribed?
It is possible the muscle loss, which will occur with weight loss is an issue.
I was referred to a very good NHS physio to get me started on exercise before I lost weight, but he dealt a lot with others who had similar issues with muscles and limbs, so it's worth talking to his doctor.

Yes do have a look at the thread suggested about the yoghurts but a simple greek yoghurt with some of your own added berries would be an idea as you can buy them frozen.
Has he tried using a stick when walking that might give him a bit of support. He could start with some sitting exercises to help his leg muscles get some strength.
Also make sure he wears good shoes to give some support rather than slippers.

Hi. You don't need low fat yogurts as the fat doesn't contribute to your blood cholesterol - it's your liver that decides that. I have Light & Free fruit yogurts which do happen to be 0% fat but don't have any added sugar so are low-carb.

It certainly contributes to mine.
I'll listen to my body thanks, and stay low fat, low cholesterol.

I am completely new to being T2, but when I was diagnosed while in hospital last week they gave me only fully natural (non-modified in any way) yoghurt last week.

@travellor thanks for the hemp milk tip, I may look into that.
