Type 2
Hi everyone, my name is Jackie. I was given the diagnosis at the end of April. Bloods come back with a HbA1c reading of 93! A bit high I was informed! Put onto Metformin and told not to bother with a monitor to keep a check on my sugar levels? Whilst seeing the nurse, my initial monitor reading was 11.3. I am currently taking 2 tablets at night and one in the morning, upping the morning dose next week. I did buy a monitor and my readings are all over the place! I have lost 8lbs in 4 weeks by cutting down on carbs. I don't have a massive amount to lose - maybe another half a stone! I have read through the forum on here and have taken to measuring levels pre and post foods - not every day. I seem to be having issues with good old oatmeal. One day I was 9.9, two hours later, 8.1 (30g oats with kiwi fruit and skimmed milk). Today it was 6.9 pre overnight oats - 2 hours later 11.4..... bit of a jump! I did use full fat Greek yoghurt this time and blueberries. Struggling to find out what to have for breakfasts as its usually around 10 am I eat as I am at work! Might try normal porridge and milk tomorrow and see if it spikes as much!! Taken to walking on weekends for a good 2 - 3 hrs at a time and blood levels are always around 5 - 6 on my return. After finishing work yesterday - they were over 9 again - sitting down at desk!! I do get up and walk around, but generally being office based, tied to my desk for the most part!! Oh well, thats probably it in a nutshell!!

Hi Jackie,
What led to you being diagnosed? Did you have symptoms?

Hi Colin, no classic symptoms apart from constant thrush!!!! (Sorry!) No excessive thirst or tiredness. I did have gestational diabetes with my children and my sister and brother have now been diagnosed (they both over 60). Nurse said it was most likely hereditary.

Best way to sort your breakfast out is to look at the difference between pre and post- prandial readings - as you have been doing. Any reading above 3mmol difference upwards indicates that your body may be struggling to deal with that meal. For some people oats are fine, for others, it's a big no go. Try berries instead of tropical fruit with full fat yoghurt - this works for many people - you can always experiment again later on when you are more settled numbers wise.

Everyone reacts differently to foods so you'll only know you by constantly testing new things and making swaps for those you are sensitive to.

The other thing to factor in is how active you are after eating breakfast. Even 15 mins cleaning dishes or ironing may bring your spike down - a brisk walk certainly will! So, if you were more active one day than another that could help explain the discrepancy.

We've all been there, I promise!

Hi @Jackiejh and well done on getting a monitor regardless of what the DN said! It's the only sure-fire way to find out what you can and can't eat. I no longer test unless I'm eating something new because I've been testing for the best part of the year and noting down results, and am now confident I'm eating what suits me (well, usually...I've been known to fall off the wagon on occasion!)

Keep at it. It will just become a part of your daily routine and you'll soon get to grips with suitable foods 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Jackiejh

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. :(

Hope things to settle for you over the next few weeks. Those elevated and erratic BGs can be very draining.

Was your weight loss intentional? It’s just that you said you didn’t have a lot to lose?

I only ask, because we have some new arrivals on the forum who have a bit of a rough ride with their diabetes at the beginning, which doesn‘t seem to play fair, and they later discover that they were not T2 as had been assumed, but one of the other rarer types like LADA, or perhaps just a late onset T1 where some Drs assume T1 to be a condition that develops in childhood.

Best of luck! Keep asking questions, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Hello and welcome. 🙂

Hi, sorry for the late reply! I have now lost nearly a stone, was 11st 8 and am now 10st 9. Putting this down to cutting down on the carbs and maybe drinking gin instead of cider!! My doc has asked for more bloods to be done as she was a bit astounded at the high first blood test. Having that done on 28th June, will let you know the result! My testing now is usually around 5 - 6 most mornings, so they seem to have settled down now!

yes I was diagnosed in January, type 2 still getting my head around it,I find the balance magazine good, gave me info about diabetic retinopathy, didnt have a clue and I had oppointment on Friday for this, atleast I know whats happening now.
Hi Maggie, I am certainly finding new recipes and maybe eating a lot more veg than before. I think I am getting there too!!

Hi Vonny, I am certainly eating more healthily now, just tweeking some usual dishes and cutting out pasta, potatoes and rice - just have them occasionally now. I do like a beverage or two on the weekend, so gin and slimline tonic is now my preferred tipple!!!

Great stuff @Jackiejh - congrats on the terrific weight loss, and those numbers are excellent 🙂

Fantastic!! Well done, keep it up!

Have a good time...and if you can't be good be better than you used to be:D

Life is for living so you need to make it work for you. Eating out is probably the most difficult bit for me as meals out are so carby but you can always have smaller portions/share dessert etc. Enjoy!
