Hi everyone just a question as but baffled my grandson is newly diagnosed with DT1 when admitted to hospital. After discharge he went back to hospital he has a blood test for antibodies and C-peptide to see if he is 1 or 2 has diffilct to say which he is now he on and insulin and yesterday was prescribed Metformin has anybody been in the situation before please

Some Type 1s do take Metformin @Rac123 It helps with insulin resistance. Did he have the Type 1 antibodies?

Hi Inka he went to a outpaint appointment and they have done antibodies test we are awaiting result but the letter gave us is blood gas and bicarbonate and HbA1c results from when he was in hospital but they said in letter difficult if he has 1 or 2 even thou hospital saying 1

Sorry I forgot to say they just said they was going test antibodies and C-peptide

Sorry @Rac123 I thought you were saying he’d already had the tests. Diagnosing diabetes type isn’t always easy and straightforward, as many members here will confirm. The two tests he’s having should make things a lot clearer. Be warned that the result can take a little while to come through.

Yea they did say they would take a while for results and he being treated for DT1 so maybe he not just have wait and see thankyou for replying

I just looked back and saw that your grandson is in his teens. Although teens can get Type 2, I can understand why he’s being treated as Type 1 because that would be most likely at his age, I think. The really good thing is that they’re checking and giving him great care.

Thankyou for information I find it a lot to absorb as new to diabetes so in depth

Yes, it’s an awful lot to get your head round @Rac123 It does get easier though and your confidence grows as your knowledge grows.

Sorry to hear about your grandson’s diagnosis @Rac123, but good to hear that they are being thorough about making sure they have the right type, and can give the most appropriate treatment.

Hope he is coping well in the meantime.
