Relationship to Diabetes

Hello I’m new to this site having recently been diagnosed with type2 diabetes. Still trying to get my head around it and reading lots of different advice from specialists.

How did you come to be diagnosed and do you know what your HbA1c result was?

Hi Docb, I was being checked out for chest pains and found that I had hi blood pressure. After being given medication and bloods taken they reported back to me to say that I was type 2. I don’t know what the HbA1c result was. All this was done remotely over the phone so completely floored me. I have been given a blood testing kit to monitor and report back which I’m fine with. i have just purchased a book by professor Roy Taylor about reversing type 2 diabetes which has given me a new purpose and a determination to beat this thing. I have not been prescribed any medication yet.

Hi EllsBells, thank you for welcoming me onboard. I haven’t been prescribed any medication just been given a blood monitor to record glucose before and after a meal.
 
Great to hear your GP is advocating testing - that will make all the difference to managing your D. It is totally doable without drugs. By the sounds of it, you aren't too far into D. territory but do call your surgery to get the HbA1c score as it will give you a benchmark to work from. The score will be anything from from 30-100+. Under 42 is normal, 42-48 is pre-diabetic and anything above that is in the diabetic range. Are you in need of losing weight if you are looking at the 800 diet?
 
@EllsBells is spot on with his comment about your GP and the suggestion to get your HbA1c result from your surgery. That will tell you how far you are into diabetes territory and help establish a plan to get things under control.

What sort of numbers are you getting from your blood monitor? Don't forget that blood glucose goes up and down depending on time of day and when you eat so don't start panicking when you look at your early test results. You need a few tests to get a measure of what is normal for you.

I’ll ask for my Hba1c results when I speak to the nurses on Friday.My blood monitoring results are getting better as I seem to be within the limits both before and after meals so I’m a bit confused and sore fingered at the moment.

What limits have you been given before and after meals and are you testing asap when you wake up and at bedtime too?

I’ve not read Prof Taylor’s book, but several members here have had impressive results either by following an 800cal ‘shake’ type intervention, or by more gradual, but significant weight loss.

Others focus more on using their BG meter (great that you have been given one by your GP!) to make sustainable BG-friendly changes to their eating habits by checking before and again 2hrs after meals, and aiming for a rise of less than 3mmol/L between the two readings.

Many new members also find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu.

The really tricky thing is that blood glucose responses to various foods are highly individual, and it can be impossible to say which types and amounts of carbohydrate will ‘spike’ your BG without checking for yourself.

You may find test-review-adjust by Alan S a helpful framework for using your BG meter to tweak your menu 🙂

Spikes seem to be morning after breakfast but no more than 13 at the most.My HbA1c score was 56 so instantly diagnosed type 2. Ive lost 8lbs in the last week but am keen to look into the 800 cal shake diet maybe a week on week of basis. Has anyone else tried it this way?

Are you trying to cope with breakfast cereal? It is so high carb, very few type twos can manage more than a spoonful.
Something with less carbs, more proper meal would be a better option - there's always eggs and bacon.
